The Woodlands to negotiate with Early Bird for new short-course public golf complex

The Woodlands Township officials will negotiate with Early Bird, which manages East River 9 in Houston, for a public-private partnership on a nine-hole golf complex off Gosling Road.

The township's board of directors authorized President and CEO Monique Sharp to negotiate with the company for a contract for the partnership at its Feb. 26 meeting. The township initially approved a request for proposals on Dec. 4.

Latest update: As of the Jan. 23 deadline for RFPs, the township received three proposals from:

  • Park Golf
  • Early Bird
  • American Golf

After weighing the options, presented by the township's Chief Operating Officer, the board voted 7-0 in favor of Early Bird.

Houston Methodist Breast Care Center at The Woodlands marks 10 years, surpasses 200K patients served

The Houston Methodist Breast Care Center at The Woodlands celebrated a decade of service, according to a Feb. 26 news release. 

The two-minute impact: Since opening in 2016, the center has served more than 200,000 patients, becoming a regional destination for screenings and diagnostic care for residents locally and from communities several hours outside the Houston area, according to the release.

Officials said the facility was created to expand access to early detection services closer to home while providing individualized care in a supportive setting.

The center offers advanced imaging and diagnostic services, including digital mammography, 3D breast imaging, ultrasound, MRI screenings and image-guided biopsies designed to detect abnormalities earlier and improve treatment outcomes, per the release.

According to the release, the facility is now recognized as a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence and holds accreditation through the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers.

SHSU expands Bearkat Promise program, increasing free tuition threshold to $100K

Families making up to $100,000 are now eligible for Sam Houston State University’s Bearkat Promise program, after the university announced Feb. 24 that it was raising the family income eligibility threshold from $40,000.

In a nutshell: The Bearkat Promise program provides eligible students with the mandatory tuition and fees they need for up to 15 credit hours per semester, according to its website. The increased income threshold starts in fall 2026.

More details: According to the news release, to qualify for the program, students must:

  • Be an entering freshman or transfer student
  • Be a Texas resident with demonstrated financial need
  • Be eligible for a federal Pell Grant
  • Submit their Free Application for Federal Student Aid by the priority deadline of March 1
  • Enroll in at least 12 credit hours per semester

Quote of note: “College affordability affects far more families than many realize,” Jason L. Meriwether, vice president for enrollment management, said via news release. “Expanding the Bearkat Promise ensures more Texas students can focus on earning their degree rather than worrying about tuition.”
