League City mayor files for reelection, challenged by council member

League City Mayor Nick Long filed for re-election, but he is challenged by council member Tom Crews.

In November, voters will have the opportunity to elect candidates to five open City Council seats.

On the ballot: The candidate filing period for the Nov. 3 election opened July 20 and ends Aug. 17, according to the city’s website.

Looking ahead: The election will take place Nov. 3 with early voting running from Oct. 19-30, according to the city’s website.

New sugar waxing salon to open in Webster

Waxing salon Hello Sugar is coming to Webster after construction is expected to be completed in early August, according to a filing with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation, or TDLR.

What’s in a name: Hello Sugar offers full-body waxing, sugaring, laser hair removal, and brow and lash services, according to its website.

What to know about tax-free weekend in Texas, Aug. 7-9

Ahead of the 2026 school year, the Texas Comptroller’s Office encourages all taxpayers to support Texas businesses while saving money on tax-free purchases on most clothing and school supplies during the annual tax-free weekend from Aug. 7-9. 

What you need to know: A variety of school supplies and clothing items can be purchased from a Texas store or an online or catalog seller doing business in Texas. In most cases, exemption certificates are not required to buy qualifying items tax free, according to the Texas Comptroller’s Office. 

Qualifying items include:

  • Clothing
  • Footwear 
  • School supplies
  • Face masks
  • Backpacks
