Pickleball courts, batting cages coming to Shadow Creek Ranch sportsplex

Pearland City Council approved an agreement with the Pearland Economic Development Corporation for up to $22 million to fund improvements at the Sportsplex at Shadow Creek Ranch and the Clear Creek trailhead.

What’s new: The agreement also includes up to $1 million to support the expansion of Broadway Street from Kirby Drive to Halfmoon Bay Drive. Additionally, council approved a nearly $716,000 agreement with Clark Condon Associates for design work. The sportsplex and Clear Creek trail project includes:

  • Concession stand renovations

  • Covered pickleball courts

  • A natural-turf multipurpose field

  • An artificial-turf event lawn and pavilion

  • Batting cages

  • Improved pedestrian connections

  • Updated lighting

  • Safety features

Friendswood ISD Superintendent Thad Roher reflects on 10 years leading the district

In an interview with Community Impact, Friendswood ISD superintendent Thad Roher reflected on his decade leading the district, discussing its growth, his priorities for the future and what he hopes will remain at the heart of FISD.

What you need to know: A Friendswood native, Roher graduated from Friendswood High School in 1986 before returning to the district as an assistant principal in 1999. He became superintendent in 2017, leading the district through Hurricane Harvey during his first year, followed by a pandemic and several bond elections.

“I didn't want to just be a superintendent. I wanted to be the superintendent here in Friendswood,” Roher said. “I put my name in the hat and just was blessed to get a chance to do it.”

Women-owned michelada bar crafts drinks with love and chili powder

Walking along Bradford Avenue in Kemah, visitors can head up the steps and through the doors of MicheLadies, a women-owned michelada bar.

Customers are surrounded by vibrant colors, neon lights and a menu with a large selection of michelada flavors to choose from.

What’s special about it: With options ranging from the “Surf and Turf,” which is a savory option with both shrimp and beef jerky, to the “Spicy Pickle” or fruit-flavored micheladas, co-owner Kassandra Cantu felt it was important to craft a drink for every taste bud with an opportunity for customers to become adventurous.

“I tend to make new things monthly and I try to switch up some drinks and flavors for the micheladas,” Cantu said. “I try to keep it fresh and new so people can kind of try different things that they’re not used to.”
