The Woodlands Township met for the first day of its fiscal year 2027 budget workshop on Aug. 17, identifying a total of $184.6 million in revenue, a $17 million decrease from the FY 2026 budget. 

The breakdown:  President and CEO Monique Sharp outlined the township financials for 2026 and the preliminary budget for 2027 in her presentation. According to the taxpayer impact statement, the tax rate adopted in 2025 for FY 2026 as well as median homestead value and tax were:

• $0.1714 total tax rate per $100 valuation

• $485,695 median homestead taxable value

• $832.48 tax on median homestead

The projections for the FY 2027 no-new-revenue rate are:

• $0.1654 per $100 valuation no-new-revenue tax rate

• $509,335 median homestead taxable value

• $842.44 tax on median homestead

A total of six candidates have filed to run for four available seats on The Woodlands Township board of directors as of Aug. 18, according to the township website, with only one of those seats set to be a contested race in the Nov. 3 election.

What else: The last day to file a declaration of write-in candidacy is Aug. 21 by 5 p.m. Early voting will take place Oct. 19-30, and Election Day is Nov. 3.

A number of road projects are underway in The Woodlands area, some of which are funded by the Montgomery County road bond as well as ongoing projects from the Texas Department of Transportation. 

Ongoing projects

Rayford Road and Discovery Creek Boulevard traffic signal

Project: A traffic signal will be placed at the intersection, and the project will add left-turn lanes in both directions on Rayford Road.

Update: Turn lane construction and traffic signal installation are completed, and pedestrian ramps and striping are also completed, Montgomery County Precinct 3 officials said Aug. 7. 

Grogans Mill Road at North Millbend Drive intersection upgrade

Project: The project will redesign the traffic signal and intersection layout, upgrade traffic signal facilities, replace pavement in the intersection and restripe the intersection.

Update: The intersection construction is complete, and pedestrian poles were being installed as of Aug. 7, county officials said. The permanent signal equipment was slated for delivery in mid-September to replace temporary poles.

On the heels of a week of budget workshops, Montgomery County commissioners are set to handle a range of regular business items during the Aug. 20 meeting such as approving vendors for several bond projects as well as advancing a flood mitigation project.

What you need to know: Several projects that could move forward this week include approving the vendor for debris monitoring for San Jacinto Watershed and Tributary Barrier Flood Mitigation projects, for Stewart Creek, Lake Creek and East County, according to the agenda.

In 2025, Community Impact reported that the Texas General Land Office announced $60.37 million in funding had been awarded for drainage improvements across the San Jacinto River watershed. Community Impact previously reported that the county's application was originally filed in 2022, and the funding would be used to remove obstructions, clean tributaries and repair eroding creek beds and stream banks.
