3 Bastrop-Cedar Creek transportation projects to know

Get the latest on three transportation projects in Bastrop and Cedar Creek—including a paused street rehabilitation project on Wilson Street, the upcoming repaving of South Pope Bend and two new four-way stops on Carter Street.

1. Upcoming—Wilson Street rehabilitation ($462,400): Bastrop Streets Director Lance Dodge said part of the project was finished in July between Farm and Cedar streets; however, the project is on hold until 2027—following major construction work at the River Terrace subdivision.

2. Upcoming—South Pope Bend repaving ($952,782.50): Bastrop County commissioners will consider a contract with Asphalt Inc. on July 20. Officials hope to have the work finished before Aug. 12, ahead of Cedar Creek students returning to school. 

3. Completed—Carter Street four-way intersections ($1,600): Bastrop City Council OK’d the work at a June 23 meeting, and the intersections were completed by July 8.

Texas’ largest Corvette show returns to Bastrop July 18

More than 375 Corvettes will roll into the Bastrop Convention & Exhibit Center on July 18 for the annual Corvette Invasion.

The details: Billed as the largest Corvette show in Texas, spectators can browse the Corvettes while listening to live music and eating snacks.

Before you go: While the event is free to attend, officials are collecting $10 donations for the Bastrop County Emergency Food Pantry and backpacks for local schoolchildren.

Husband-and-wife duo Daniel and Adelita Sanchez are now serving Mexican-inspired smash burgers and other comfort food at Bastrop’s Chestnut Grove Food Truck Court. Daniel Sanchez described the menu as American with a Mexican twist—inspired by a fusion of the couple's Mexican roots with an American classic: the hamburger. According to the owners, the most popular order is the La Norteña—a beef burger with avocado, bacon, caramelized onions, cheese, grilled ham and a housemade chipotle sauce.

House of Chettinad brings authentic South Indian flavors to Leander

On the southern edge of Leander, a restaurant is serving up authentic flavors from Chettinad, a region of South India with a rich history of spice trading.

House of Chettinad offers a restaurant and bar managed by executive chef and founder Mahendran Gunasekaran, whose professional career spans decades and continents.

Gunasekaran said Chettinad’s flavors are set apart by the “bold” mixture of spices, owing to the influence of the spice trade on the region.

Austin Light Rail vehicle design to advance under $39M contract with Stadler

Switzerland-based Stadler has been selected to deliver the train cars for Austin Light Rail, the third and final major vendor brought on for the project's first stages before construction begins next year.

The overview: Officials with the Austin Transit Partnership, the entity overseeing the transit program, advanced a $39 million contract with Stadler to design the vehicles July 15.

The details: The fully electric vehicles will be roughly 120 feet long with capacity for 240 or more passengers, and can be coupled for special events. 

Designs will allow for greater rider accessibility, with level boarding access and low floors throughout most of the car area to avoid steps.

By the numbers: The initial $39 million authorized in July is one piece of an overall $352.8 million initiative to design, build and test Austin Light Rail vehicles for delivery in the 2030s.

Outdoor New Braunfels music venue Whitewater Amphitheater files for bankruptcy

A New Braunfels music venue has filed for bankruptcy with the hope of supporting its long-term future.

What’s happening: Whitewater Amphitheater officials voluntarily filed for protection under Chapter 11 of the U.S. Bankruptcy Code, according to a July 7 news release.

The filing aims to provide the venue the time and flexibility to complete financial restructuring.

What they’re saying: Whitewater Amphitheater owner William Korioth said the decision allows them to continue delivering live music that guests have come to expect.

“Our focus remains on our employees, our guests, our artists, our partners and preserving everything that has made Whitewater special,” Korioth said in the release. “We look forward to continuing to welcome fans to Whitewater as we position the company for long-term success.”

What else? Additional information will be provided as appropriate during the restructuring process, the release states.
