In addition to selling floral arrangements, Kambra Bacon, owner of Prosper Blooms said she also sells gifts, clothing, candles, chocolate and more in her downtown Prosper store.

The details: Although Bacon sources some flowers from abroad including roses from Ecuador and tulips from Holland she prefers shopping locally.

“My first go-to [source] are small flower farms in the area, probably within a 50-mile radius,” Bacon said.

How it happened: Bacon said after moving to Prosper in 2006, she determined there was a florist void. In 2010, she filled the void when she opened Prosper Blooms.

“When we moved here … Preston [Road] was one lane, no grocery store … and no place to get flowers,” Bacon said. “I did a 12-mile radius [search] and there just wasn't anything. My husband said, ‘Start your own.’”

Blaze Pizza is moving forward with a Celina location located off Preston Road.

The details: The chain pizza restaurant offers signature and customized pizzas, with side options of salads and cheesy bread. Construction is planned to wrap up in December, according to a filing with the Texas Department of Licensing and Registration.

Austin-based private school Alpha School is aiming to expedite learning for more students using artificial intelligence at new academies opening across the country.

What happened: On Sept. 9, U.S. Secretary of Education Linda McMahon visited Alpha School in Austin alongside Texas Education Agency Commissioner Mike Morath. Alpha School co-founder MacKenzie Price highlighted how the school is using AI to personalize and improve students’ education.

What they're saying: “It's the most exciting thing I've seen in education in a long time,” McMahon said about Alpha School. “I'm incredibly enthusiastic about this.”

How it works: Students complete their academic learning in two hours each day using an AI platform known as 2 Hour Learning. Price said the Alpha School model enables students to learn twice as fast as they would in a traditional school setting.

The update: Alpha School opened several new academies across the United States this school year, including a K-3 school in Plano and K-8 school in Fort Worth. The company is planning to open an academy in Houston this winter.
