SH 114 to see temporary lane closures starting Oct. 26

Permanent striping for SH 114 will take place Oct. 26–30 and Nov. 2–6, according to a Facebook post from the official page for city of Roanoke.

The details: The striping will occur from Raceway Drive to Trophy Club Drive, per the post. Lane closures will happen each night from 8 p.m.-5 a.m.

The context: The entirety of SH 114 roadwork includes transforming a state highway into a six-lane freeway that includes additional frontage roads.

Fort Worth Fire Department Chief Jim Davis resigns

Current Fort Worth Fire Department Chief Jim Davis announced he will resign.

According to an email from the city, his last day will be Oct. 31.

Quote of note: "I received word today that Chief Davis has tendered his resignation as fire chief and the city has accepted his resignation," Mayor Mattie Parker said in a news release. "We appreciate Chief Davis' years of dedicated service to the city and wish him well in his future endeavors." 

How we got here: Davis was placed on administrative leave Sept. 23, according to a city official, but no further details were provided.

The interim chief is Raymond Hill. The Fort Worth City Council has an agenda item for the Oct. 28 meeting to officially appoint Hill to that position.

What else? According to his online biography, Davis worked in Columbus, Ohio, before coming to Fort Worth. He started his firefighting career in 1984 as a firefighter/paramedic in Westerville, Ohio.

Q&A: Meet the 3 candidates running for Senate District 9 in Tarrant County

Three candidates are running for the Senate District 9 seat during the Nov. 4 election. Two Republicans from Southlake and a Fort Worth Democrat will be up for election to represent Tarrant County in the Texas Senate. The seat became vacant this summer when former Sen. Kelly Hancock resigned from the Legislature to lead the state comptroller’s office.

What you need to know: Candidates running for the seat were asked to complete a questionnaire from Community Impact. They were asked to keep responses under 50 words, answer the questions provided and avoid attacking opponents. Answers may have been edited or cut to adhere to those guidelines, or for style and clarity.

1. Collin College: Beginning in the fall 2025 semester, Collin College students gained access to online education from schools across the state through a partnership with the Texas Statewide Course Sharing Exchange Program. The program allows students to sign up for online courses from schools statewide while also enrolled in Collin College courses, with the goal to increase availability of courses while also supporting students completing their education, a college news release states.

2. Texas Christian University: Six new residence halls are under construction. In 2027, the university plans to open a 550-bed hall in Worth Hills and, on the east side of campus, three first-year halls totaling 1,350 beds, a 450-bed hall for sophomores, and a 120-bed townhome and apartment community for upperclassmen.
