Bastrop to improve motorist-pedestrian safety along Jessica Place

Officials want motorists traveling along Jessica Place in Bastrop to be more wary of their speed, as the Streets and Maintenance Department will install new speed limit signs and new school zone traffic control devices near Bastrop Middle School.

What we know: There will be four new speed limit signs, including:

  • Two marked at 20 mph along the residential portion of Jessica Place
  • Two marked at the prima facie speed limit along the arterial thoroughfare of Jessica Place

The prima facie speed limit for residential areas in Bastrop is 30 mph, according to city documents.

Why it matters: “Currently, Jessica Place has insufficient speed limit signs and needs the correct speed signage and the [installation] of flashing school zone traffic control devices,” Bastrop Police Chief Vicky Steffanic said in a staff report.

Second food truck court to bring more dining options to Bastrop

Bastrop residents may soon have a new place to gather over burgers, tacos and fries, as plans move forward for a food truck court near Cedar Street and Hwy. 95.

About the project: The 14,400-square-foot project, called Zavodny Food Court, is scheduled to begin construction March 1 and be completed by June 1. It has an estimated cost of $189,000.

The scope of work includes site preparation and utility connections to accommodate eight food trucks, construction of a small bathroom, buildout of a storage space and the addition of sidewalks.

Something to note: Zavodny Food Court will mark the second food park of its kind, following the Chestnut Grove Food Truck Court's 2023 opening.

Long-term closure to begin on I-35 frontage road near Riverside Drive

Starting Feb. 16, the northbound I-35 frontage road at Riverside Drive will be closed through 2029 to accommodate construction of a pedestrian bridge across Lady Bird Lake. The project is part of the I-35 Capital Express Central Project's Lady Bird Lake segment.

The update: According to Texas Department of Transportation officials, a Riverside Drive bypass lane is now open and a temporary south-to-north U-turn at Woodland Avenue will be opened in order to accommodate the closure. Northbound frontage road traffic across Lady Bird Lake bridge will be reduced to one lane, and the existing pedestrian path and north sidewalk on Riverside Drive will be closed. This traffic pattern is expected to remain in place through 2029.

Some context: The I-35 Capital Express Central Project is a $4.5 billion project slated to bring two nontolled high-occupancy vehicle lanes between Hwy. 290 and Hwy. 71, remove upper decks along I-35, sink sections of the roadway by about 25 feet and widen the corridor with more lanes.
