Austin eyes new charter amendment election after canceled 2024 vote

Austinites could vote on several updates to the city's foundational rulebook this fall, two years after an election for some of those changes was canceled.

The details: Austin's city charter establishes basic rules and procedures from elections and administration to planning and taxing. The charter can only be amended every two years through an election.

At City Council's request, charter edits were proposed throughout 2024 and officials eventually called an election over more than a dozen potential changes. However, errors in how the city ordered that election prompted a resident lawsuit and the vote was halted under a court order.

Some of those past amendments and at least two new concepts could once again be placed on ballots this fall. Council will discuss a possible 2026 charter amendment election further this summer.

The Driskill Grill and Bar steakhouse reopens in Austin’s historic hotel

The Driskill Grill initially opened in 1930 and after nearly a century of service, MML Hospitality has relaunched the historic spot as an American steakhouse, according to a news release. The new concept is spearheaded by April Bloomfield, MML Hospitality’s executive chef since 2025.

The restaurant opened its doors to customers May 18.

The history: The Driskill Hotel has been a historic Austin staple since 1886, housing political figures, musicians and entrepreneurs, according to the hotel’s website. The space has endured several restoration projects, preservation efforts and partnerships, including one with MML in 2025 to bring 1881 Cafe, The Victorian and The Driskill Grill to the hotel.

On the menu: Patrons looking to dine in for lunch or dinner can find salads, sandwiches, steaks and a selection of sides, including braised peas with mint and Thai style crab fried rice.

8 of the nation’s fastest-growing cities are in Texas, census data shows

Texas was home to eight of the nation’s fastest-growth municipalities in 2025 as people continue moving to smaller cities in the state’s large metropolitan areas, new U.S. Census Bureau data shows.

The details: Celina, located about an hour north of Dallas, grew faster than any other U.S. city in 2025, according to the census data released May 14. The city grew by 24.6% between July 2024 and July 2025, and 64,427 people called Celina home as of July 1.

Fulshear, a 64,630-person city west of Houston, saw the second-fastest growth in the nation last year, at 21%.

What's happening: Helen You, interim director of the Texas Demographic Center, said the trend of people moving to smaller cities in major metros “is not unique to Texas."

The suburban boom comes amid a slowdown in overall population growth, according to previous Community Impact reporting. While Texas gained more new residents last year than any other U.S. state, growth slowed significantly amid a nationwide reduction in immigration from other countries.
