Texas Woman’s University announced a strategic partnership with Girl Scouts of Northeast Texas to provide admissions, financial aid and readiness opportunities for Girl Scout Gold Award recipients.

How it works: TWU and Girl Scouts leaders celebrated during an Aug. 6 signing ceremony, according to a TWU news release. Eligible Gold Award Girl Scouts will earn admission consideration after finishing their junior year of high school, depending on how they meet admission requirements.

Other opportunities include merit scholarships, waived application fees, admissions counseling, financial aid counseling and college readiness programs. The partnership will also offer expanded access to admissions support and resources to help with college adjustment.

Girls who earn the Girl Scout Gold Award are honored for leading long-lasting projects that have a positive impact in the community, according to the release. The distinction is considered the highest achievement in Girl Scouting.

Girl Scouts of Northeast Texas spans across 32 counties, which encompasses 23,000 square miles, according to its website.

Denton’s first Dogtopia will open a “state-of-the-art” paradise this fall.

The details: Dogtopia will open off Colorado Boulevard in the fall, according to the company’s Instagram page. General manager Travis Howell said in a post he is opening the dog day care with his wife and dad.

Dogtopia offers boarding and day care services, where pet owners can drop their dogs off for the afternoon for socialization and play. According to the company website, Dogtopia will also provide a report card for each day care visit.

The company has live webcams in playrooms, which monitor pets when they are socializing with other dogs. The Denton location has HVAC systems that clean and purify the air, and rubberized floors that protect dogs from impact and heavy play, according to its website.

Within the next year, Texans will likely see changes to when they can vote early in elections, including expanded weekend voting hours.

The overview: Last year, state lawmakers passed Senate Bill 2753, which shifts Texas’ early voting window closer to election day, cutting out a three-day gap between the two voting periods and adding more Saturday and Sunday voting.

While the changes did not take effect immediately and were designed to help boost voter turnout, local election administrators said the law will also significantly raise costs for municipalities and delay the release of election results.

Election officials said the current three-day break allows staff to set up polling places for election day and prepare submitted ballots so results from early and mail-in voting can be released quickly after the polls close on election night.

The impact: Harris County Clerk Teneshia Hudspeth estimated that the shift would raise the cost of administering a large election by 30% and increase costs for smaller elections by 9%, due to personnel, equipment and voter education needs.
