Alvin ISD trustees approved a tax rate of $1.1249 per $100 valuation of a home for fiscal year 2026-27 at its Sept. 1 workshop.

What residents need to know: The FY 2026-27 tax rate is around 2% lower than last year’s rate of $1.15 per $100 valuation of a home, documents show. Based on that rate, a homeowner with a median homestead taxable value of $380,000 would have an estimated annual property tax bill of about $2,670, documents show.

In case you missed it: In June, trustees approved nearly $381.4 million in expenses and around $391.4 million in revenue for FY 2026-27, budget documents show.

Current representative Randy Weber is facing a challenge from the former mayor of Port Arthur, Thurman “Bill” Bartie, for the Texas 14th Congressional District in the Nov. 3 election.

What you need to know: Rep. Randy Weber has served Texas’ 14th Congressional District since 2013, taking over from former representative Ron Paul after his retirement. Former Port Arthur Mayor Thurman “Bill” Bartie came in second place during the Democratic primary, but received enough votes to advance and won the runoff election.

Community Impact reported that both Weber and Bartie defeated their opponents in March and May, respectively.

Write-in candidates may also appear on the ballot; however, Community Impact does not send questionnaires to write-in candidates.

For the first time in over a decade, there is no incumbent in the Texas attorney general's race as Republican Ken Paxton runs for U.S. Senate.

Democrat Nathan Johnson, a state senator from Dallas; Republican Mayes Middleton, a state senator from Galveston; and Libertarian Tom Oxford, an attorney from Nederland, are running to replace him this November. Community Impact asked the candidates for their perspectives on Texas' open records laws, state litigation and other topics.

How we got here: Johnson and Middleton each won their primary runoff elections in May, Community Impact reported, while Oxford was selected as the Texas Libertarian Party's candidate during an April nominating convention.

Looking ahead: Early voting in eight statewide races and dozens of local elections runs from Oct. 19-30. Election Day is Nov. 3.
