Cooking Girl is now open for business as of its soft opening Aug. 10 in The Woodlands Grogan's Mill Village Center, spokesperson Yi Liang said.

What's on the menu: The restaurant will serve a blend of Sichuan cuisine specialities such as Zang's lamb chop, chicken love taro and pyramid wings.

Shenandoah City Council discussed updates to the fiscal year 2026-27 budget at its Aug. 5 budget workshop meeting, including a potential increase to its FY 2025-26 tax rate of $0.1821 per $100 valuation.

Budget explained: The no-new-revenue new tax rate for FY 2026-27, which would provide the same revenue to the city as last year, is $0.1849 per $100 valuation, Finance Director Lisa Wasner said.

According to city documents, the voter approval tax rate is $0.1919 per $100 valuation, with the city’s total certified taxable property value currently at $1.7 billion.

After discussion, the council voted on a motion to propose a rate of $0.1911 per $100 valuation for FY 2026-27, an increase of $0.009 per $100 valuation.

Sorting out the details: A public hearing must happen before the adoption of the tax rate if it is higher than the no-new-revenue rate, according to state law.

On Aug. 6, Lone Star College System’s board of trustees unanimously approved a balanced $577.5 million budget for fiscal year 2026-27, which features 2% raises for full- and part-time employees.

The gist: According to Aug. 7 meeting documents, the FY 2026-27 budget featured employee pay raises of:

• 2% increase for all full-time employees hired on or before March 31
• 2% bump for part-time hourly, non-instructional employees, except for student assistants and college work-study participants
• 2% more for adjunct faculty, who are paid per contact hour

• $18.5 million in additional funding from local taxes for FY 2026-27
• $7 million more state revenue for FY 2026-27

Sam Houston State University has announced a new name for the College of Osteopathic Medicine in Conroe at a Texas State University System board of regents meeting on Aug. 6. The college will be named after philanthropists and SHSU alumni Russell and Glenda Gordy, according to a news release from SHSU. 

The SHSU College of Osteopathic Medicine, now the Russell and Glenda Gordy College of Osteopathic medicine, opened in 2020.

Quote of note: “Glenda and I are deeply honored to have the College of Osteopathic Medicine named in our honor,” Russell Gordy said.
