Lone Star Circle of Care celebrates half a decade of mobile healthcare in Central Texas

Lone Star Circle of Care has now brought mobile mammography services to communities across Central Texas for five years. The Big Pink Bus launched in July 2021, increasing access to breast cancer screening in the region, according to a news release.

“For five years, the Big Pink Bus has brought life-saving mammography services directly to women across Central Texas,” said Jon Calvin, CEO of Lone Star Circle of Care. “This milestone reflects our ongoing commitment to early detection and expanding access to care.”

What they offer: Through the Big Pink Bus, Lone Star Circle of Care offers mammography services and breast cancer screenings. The resource’s team also supports clients after their initial visit through follow-up support and getting connected to additional resources.

The local impact: Since its initial launch, the bus has given over 10,000 mammograms, and over 80 of those patients were diagnosed with breast cancer through their initial screenings. In the last five years, the bus has traveled over 53,000 miles through Central Texas counties, including Bastrop, Hays, Travis and Williamson.

Shine Hot Pilates + Sculpt is now open in downtown Austin

Shine Hot Pilates + Sculpt recently expanded from Dallas to Austin with a new studio in downtown. The location launched with a soft opening June 26 and a grand opening June 27, according to Kris Jacobson, director of operations at Shine Hot Pilates.

What they offer: The studio offers heated workout classes combining cardio, Pilates and dance. Shine Hot Pilates has five class formats: sculpt, remix, Pilates, strength and arms, abs and assets.

Read all about it: Shine Hot Pilates founders Whitney Stern and Rachel Merritt opened their first studio in Dallas in 2019. The brand has now grown to include two studios in Dallas, one in Plano and one in downtown Austin.

The pair chose to open a location in Austin as they noticed a need for more boutique fitness and hot mat Pilates, Jacobson said.

Stern and Merritt are planning for an additional Austin expansion, as well as future projects planned for 2027, according to Jacobson.

Biblical readings, Texas-centered history lessons to be required in K-12 schools in 2030

Texas' Republican-led State Board of Education approved a sweeping rewrite of the state's social studies curriculum standards and a list of dozens of books that students will be required to read each school year, both of which are infused with biblical references. The new requirements will begin rolling out to public school classrooms in the 2030-31 school year.

The details: As many as 25 texts will be read each year in early elementary school grades, with about 10 books required in later grades. The reading list was created under a 2023 state law requiring “at least one literary work” per grade.

The new social studies curriculum standards will expand lessons about Texas and American history, deemphasizing some teachings about world cultures and people of color. The standards also expand the amount of content students will be expected to learn each year.

The debate: Proponents of the new standards and reading list said they will teach students to love their state and country, while critics said the policies do not include diverse perspectives.
