RTown Gallery brings 'upbeat and vibrant' vibes to Grapevine

The local art gallery, RTown Gallery, offers a unique space for creatives to exhibit and appreciate colorful works of art.

Read all about it: Visitors of RTown Gallery have described the location as bright and colorful, gallery manager Fawn Brown said.

“All the artists and the people that we work with, you can really see them shine with their personalities. And that’s a lot of fun,” Brown said.

The gallery first opened in 2022 before relocating to its current location in January 2023. Artists exhibited at the gallery tend to have an eclectic style, gallery owner Rachel Cerny said. She said the gallery represents a new voice in Grapevine.

Put in perspective: The gallery has become a community-driven space, Cerny said.

“We had a wedding reception here,” she said. “I want this to be a place where people can spend time.”

Check this out: The gallery’s next art show is scheduled for May 2 from 7-9 p.m.

Carroll ISD proposal includes teacher blackout days, incentives for unused leave

The Carroll ISD board of trustees considered adding blackout days where employees cannot request time off to the 2026-27 school calendar and adding attendance incentives to help with daily staff presence at the April 13 board workshop.

What’s happening?: Executive Director of Human Resources Melanie Kibodeaux recommended having days in the school year where employees cannot request discretionary time off, or there will be a dock in their day rate for those days off.

The blackout days include the last workday before a school holiday, the first workday after a school holiday, staff development or early release days, and testing days, which include state assessments and end-of-class or semester exams, according to district documents.

Teachers will not receive a dock to their pay if they request off on blackout days for family-related events, including funerals, weddings, births, medical emergencies and major family milestones, such as moving a child into college housing.

Q&A: Learn lawn care tips to enhance your yard year-round from TurfMutt Foundation President Kris Kiser

Community Impact sat down with the president and chief executive officer of the TurfMutt Foundation, Kris Kiser, to discuss the importance of lawn maintenance and a few tips to ensure your yard looks good year-round.

The TurfMutt Foundation is a nonprofit that advocates for outdoor living and the care and stewardship of yards, parks and other green spaces, according to its website.

Responses have been edited for length, clarity and style.

Why should homeowners take care of their lawns?
Our outdoor spaces, particularly our lawns, are an extension of our home. During COVID, people really did reconnect to the outdoors. It was a safe space where you could entertain, cook and meet with friends and family. It created a connection to the outdoors that we used to have.

What common mistake should homeowners watch out for when planting?
Time of year. You want the ground to essentially be thawed, so you don't want a hard freeze. Remember that newly planted plants will need water, likely supplemental water, until they're established.

Texans have until April 27 to register to vote in May runoff elections

Texans interested in casting a ballot in next month’s primary runoff election have until April 27 to register to vote or update their registration, if applicable.

The background: Texas’ primary runoff election will be held May 26. A runoff is held when no candidate secures over half of the vote in a partisan primary race.

Registering to vote: Prospective voters must submit a paper application, which is available online. Applications must be printed, signed and mailed to the voter registration office in a voter’s county of residence.

On the ballot: Various federal, state and local races will appear on the May 26 runoff ballot.

At the top of the ticket, Republican voters will pick between incumbent Sen. John Cornyn and state Attorney General Ken Paxton to determine the party’s nominee for U.S. Senate. The winner of that race will face state Rep. James Talarico, D-Austin, in November.

Something to note: The runoff election is separate from upcoming local elections, which take place May 2. Visit www.communityimpact.com/voter-guide for more information about those elections.
