Opening Nov. 21, Georgetown's new parking garage to provide 315 downtown spaces

The city of Georgetown will open its first of several planned downtown parking garages Nov. 21, adding 315 parking spaces to the area. The $23.11 million garage is located on Austin Avenue and Sixth Street.

The specifics: A parking guidance system—technology that directs drivers to empty spots—will connect with the city’s website so visitors can check if parking is available before they visit, Capital Improvements Project Manager Jennifer Bettiol said.

Georgetown’s downtown development and special events department, headed by McAuliffe, will move into office space in the parking garage permanently, once opened.

Zooming out: Georgetown first identified the need for a parking garage in its 2015 downtown parking study.

The parking study and the new garage play into the city’s downtown master plan, McAuliffe said.

Georgetown adopted its most recent plan last year, which recommends removing 71 of the 120 on-street parking spots from the square.

What they're saying: People who work downtown, like Karen Kofnovec at Red Bird Mercantile, are excited for the access both the garage and changes to the square will allow.

“Absolutely it will [improve parking] because people drive around and around four times before they find a parking place, and they get tired of that,” Kofnovec said.

The details: BSWH has plans for projects at 13 Texas facilities, totaling up to $2.5 billion, according to Williamson county documents.

What happened: Williamson County commissioners approved the issuance of the bonds from the Tarrant County Cultural Education Facilities Finance Corp. at a meeting Nov. 18. Federal law required approval of the bonds, but Williamson County will not be held financially responsible for them.

Record number of Texans expected to travel during Thanksgiving week

Thanksgiving week is expected to be one of the busiest U.S. travel periods in history, according to projections from AAA. A record 5.8 million Texans are projected to travel at least 50 miles from home Nov. 25-Dec. 1.

Zooming in: About 5.3 million Texans are expected to drive to their Thanksgiving destinations, according to a Nov. 17 news release, while about 328,000 people will fly and 140,000 will use other forms of transportation.

The impact: Texans should give themselves extra time to reach their destinations during Thanksgiving week, with the most congestion expected Nov. 25-26. Traffic is also expected to be heavy as Texans return home Nov. 30, according to INRIX, a transportation data company.

Minimal traffic is expected on Thanksgiving Day.

More details: Texas drivers will pay about the same for gas as they did last Thanksgiving, according to AAA Texas. One gallon of regular unleaded gas cost about $2.65 in Texas as of Nov. 13, down from $2.69 last year.
