Detours begin as Kyle moves 400-year-old tree for road work

Commuters along portions of Old Stagecoach Road in Kyle should plan for traffic delays through Jan. 16, as the city moves a 400-year-old heritage oak tree named Jolene.

What you need to know: Road closures will come in two phases:

  • Phase 1 will see Old Stagecoach Road closed from Cypress Forest Drive to Three Forks Drive, through Jan. 16.
  • Phase 2 will see Old Stagecoach Road closed from Cypress Forest Drive to Six Creeks Boulevard, Dec. 2-10.

Officials said the relocation is necessary to facilitate the city's 2022 voter-approved road bonds, which will widen Old Stagecoach Road to a four-lane roadway.

The cost: In total, the relocation to a pocket park about a quarter mile northwest of its current spot is expected to cost $932,800, according to city documents.

City officials said preliminary estimates indicate other related costs could include:
  • Road restoration: $129,540
  • Water valve installation: $5,000
  • Pocket park development: $300,000-$600,000

The pocket park is expected to be completed by fall 2026, while the widening of Old Stagecoach Road should be completed by 2027.

Texans again receiving full SNAP benefits, state health department says

Texans began receiving full Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits Nov. 14, the Texas Health and Human Services Commission announced.

The renewed SNAP payments came after two weeks of delays due to the 43-day federal government shutdown, which ended Nov. 12.

The overview: SNAP is a federally funded program that provides low-income individuals and families with monthly stipends to spend on groceries.

The food assistance program ran out of funding Nov. 1, one month after the government shut down amid disagreements over federal health insurance subsidies.

The details: Over 3.5 million Texans receive SNAP benefits each month, according to Feeding Texas, the statewide network of food banks.

Payments are issued on a rolling basis throughout each month.

“For SNAP clients who receive benefits on or after the 14th of the month, full benefits will be issued on their normal issuance date,” the HHSC website states. “SNAP clients who already received partial benefits will receive the rest of their monthly amount on or after Nov. 14.”
