Houston-based commercial real estate company NewQuest is set to develop a new 18.5-acre retail and residential project along one of the few remaining tracts along Morton Road in Katy.

What’s being done: The unnamed project, located at the southwest corner of Morton and Porter roads near the 100-acre Katy Park Youth Sports Complex, is slated to house multitenant retail buildings, including one that is going to be 10,860 square feet, per the release.

It will also have at least five pad sites on just under 7 acres for quick-service restaurants and retailers in addition to several food and beverage concepts, said John Nguyen, NewQuest’s senior vice president.

The site will also feature a modern farmhouse-style residential complex with 334 units by Pelican Builders Inc., per the release. The units will be a blend of one-, two- and three-bedroom floor plans with an average of 865 square feet per unit.

Stay tuned: Construction is anticipated to begin in early 2027 and is estimated to be completed in 2028, per the release.

North Italia is set to open its fourth Greater Houston area location in La Centerra, administrative assistant Karen Harvell confirmed.

What they offer: The Italian restaurant offers a variety of dishes including cacio e pepe pizza, smoked salmon avocado toast or Sunday night lasagna, according to its website. To drink, customers can also choose between a wide selection of beer, wine or specialty cocktails.

Friendswood and Alief ISDs had the largest percentages of students with dyslexia and autism across the Greater Houston area, according to Texas Education Agency data released March 13 and April 9.

The overview: Community Impact analyzed 30 local school districts across the Greater Houston region to determine which schools have the most students enrolled in special education programs.

According to the data, the districts with the largest total of students receiving special education services in 2025-26 are:

• Houston ISD with 21,430 students
• Katy ISD with 18,443 students
• Cy-Fair ISD with 17,584 students
• Fort Bend ISD with 12,688 students
• Conroe ISD with 11,239 students

On May 26, Texas Republican voters will choose their nominee for the U.S. Senate in a runoff election between incumbent Sen. John Cornyn and state Attorney General Ken Paxton.

The big picture: The Republican race for U.S. Senate is one of several statewide contests that advanced to May runoffs after no candidate received more than 50% of the vote in the March 3 primary election.

Cornyn and Paxton were the two highest-performing candidates in the eight-way primary race, with Cornyn securing 42% of the vote to Paxton's 41%.

At the polls: Early voting in Texas' runoff elections runs from May 18-22, and runoff election day is May 26.

Looking ahead: The winner of the May 26 overtime round will face the Democratic nominee for U.S. Senate—state Rep. James Talarico of Austin—in the November midterm election. Third-party and independent candidates may also appear on the November ballot, and the winner of that election will be sworn in to the U.S. Senate in January 2027.
