North Texas officials team up on World Cup transportation plan

The North Central Texas Council of Governments, through its role as the metropolitan planning organization for the Dallas-Fort Worth area, plans for more than 8.5 million travelers each day.

That number could reach up to 10 million a day with an influx of visitors for the FIFA World Cup, which will play nine games at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, known as Dallas Stadium for the event, between June 14 and July 24.

“Transit is the backbone of this particular plan because of the magnitude of international guests we are going to have and the propensity of transit in their home country,” said Michael Morris, director of transportation for the North Central Texas Council of Governments.

Zooming in: Morris said the NCTCOG plan includes starting to monitor road conditions five hours before game times. There will be 125 transit vehicles in motion in the region.
The World Cup start times for games in Arlington are at various hours, which could impede traffic, Morris said.

Dig World hosting hiring event prior to Grapevine opening

Dig World plans to open in the summer, according to a news release. Co-founder Alex Carroll said during the April Grapevine Economic Development meeting that the plan was to open in the middle of June if the weather cooperated and allow construction to happen.

The details: Alex Reszitnyk, Dig World Grapevine general manager, said they expected to attract 200,000 visitors annually and create more than 100 jobs.

There will be two Caterpillar excavators that can move almost 1,000 pounds of sand in each scoop, and there will be smaller excavators where guests can fix a broken pipe and move railroad ties.

Dig World Grapevine will have a driving course in the middle, where guests use skid steers to traverse different terrain. The Dude Perfect component of the theme park will include throwing basketballs and footballs into construction-themed targets, Reszitnyk said.

Quote of note: “It's just so different than a lot of places that you go, where it might be more technology-based,” Carroll said.
