San Marcos residents speak out on proposed data center

Dozens of San Marcos residents spoke to the City Council in relation to a data center proposed on the western side of Francis Harris Lane, voicing both support and opposition for the project.

The reception: The council held a public hearing on proposed zoning and map designation changes related to the data center at a Feb. 3 meeting.

Community members utilized both the public comment portion and public hearing agenda item to voice their opposition to the data center. Attendees continued to raise concerns regarding the potential impact on residents in the area, high water usage and excessive electricity usage.

Some residents shared support for the project, citing the addition of construction jobs necessary to complete the data center.

The next steps: The council will address the requested designation amendment and zoning change at the following upcoming meetings:

  • Feb. 17: City Council Public Hearing and first reading
  • March 3: City Council ordinance Reconsideration, second and final reading
