TxDOT announces total closure of Hwy. 249 in Spring for repairs

In an Oct. 1 news release, officials with the Texas Department of Transportation announced the southbound lanes of Hwy. 249 will be completely closed from Oct. 2-5 at Compaq Center Drive for bridge repairs.

What we know: The closure will allow TxDOT crews to repair the Compaq Center Drive bridge over Hwy. 249, which has several damaged bridge beams.

Southbound traffic on Hwy. 249 will be detoured off the highway at the Chasewood Park/Cypresswood Drive exit. Drivers will be able to get back on the highway at the next entrance ramp beyond Compaq Center Drive.

The closure will start at 9 p.m. on Oct. 2 and will be in effect until 5 a.m. Oct. 5, per the news release.

Harris County launches affordable clean energy program

Harris County leaders broke ground Sept. 30 on the first of seven community solar program sites at the Reliant Center. The initiative, called the Affordable Community Energy Program (ACE), is the region's first county-led community solar program. It is designed to expand clean energy access and affordability for low-income residents while enhancing grid resilience during extreme weather and power outages.

The program details include:

  • An $88.3 million investment the Harris County Commissioners Court approved in March

  • Generation of up to 45 megawatts of solar energy and 20 megawatt-hours of battery storage on publicly-owned land

  • Expected energy bill cuts of about 20% for 9,500 to 10,000 income-qualifying households at or below 80% of the area median income

  • Expected completion of the Reliant Center site in 2027, with the remaining six sites continuing construction through 2029

  • Resident enrollment starting in 2027 for both renters and homeowners

Klein ISD to discuss maintaining tax rate

The Klein ISD Board of Trustees will meet Oct. 5 to discuss and potentially adopt a proposed property tax rate of $1.0119 per $100 in taxable home value for the current fiscal year.

Key details of the proposal and local tax context include:

  • The proposed rate would maintain the district's lowest rate for 34 years.

  • The rate is expected to bring in $5,854 in local revenue per student and $8,011 in state revenue per student.

  • The board will hold a public hearing before voting on the rate.

  • District homeowners also face a 7.6% property tax rate increase from Harris County.

  • Harris County Emergency Services District No. 11 is considering a tax rate increase of $0.0391 per $100 of home value.
