Friendswood approves $180K in transportation improvements

Two transportation projects in Friendswood, including longstanding efforts to rehabilitate sections of Blackhawk Boulevard, secured $180,000 in funding at City Council’s July 6 meeting.

The details: At its July 6 meeting, Friendswood City Council awarded a $154,000 contract to Houston-based engineering firm Paradigm Consultants to make improvements to Blackhawk Boulevard. 

What else: City Council also amended a contract with Tulsa-based Guy Engineering Services for the rehabilitation of the Greenbriar Bridge, which crosses Chigger Creek and was originally built in 1984.

Speech therapy center now serving children in Manvel

Brilla Speech and Language relocated from Pearland to its Manvel office in April, according to a social media post from the practice.

What you need to know: Opened in September 2025, Brilla Speech and Language offers bilingual, play-based pediatric speech therapy for children ages 18 months to 8 years old and also serves older children on a case-by-case basis, according to its website.

IAH to receive over $62.26M for runway rehab

George Bush Intercontinental Airport will receive more than $62.26 million in Federal Aviation Administration grants to reconstruct runways, according to a July 2 news release from the U.S. Department of Transportation.

The details: The IAH investment is part of a $1.776 billion total investment in U.S. airports by the Federal Aviation Administration intended to support runway rehabilitations, family-friendly enhancements and safety upgrades.

8 specials, events to check out for 713 Day in the Greater Houston area

On July 13, there will be several events and specials offered around the Greater Houston area to celebrate 713 Day. Check them out below. This list is not comprehensive and information is subject to change.

Common Bond Coffee & Bakery
The bakery will offer customers one small hot drip coffee or one small cold brew paired with a pastry for $7.13 for 713 Day, per a July 6 news release. Common Bond has multiple locations across the Greater Houston area.

Typhoon Texas
The first 713 visitors to Typhoon Texas Waterpark in Katy will be able to enjoy $7.13 admission, per a July 7 news release. There will also be select food and drink specials priced at $7.13.

Houston Zoo
Visitors at the Houston Zoo between July 11-13 can enjoy $7.13 discounted tickets to celebrate 713 Day. For interested visitors, the zoo is also offering an upgraded ticket that includes a limited edition 713 Day hat, per its website.
