Mountain Mike's Pizza opens in Georgetown

Mountain Mike's Pizza, a locally owned dining franchise, opened its newest location in Georgetown.

The details: The restaurant offers diners classic and speciality pizzas, as well as wings, salads and sandwiches.

Rajeev Dewan, who owns two Mountain Mike’s locations in Manor and Cedar Park, owns and operates the new location on University Avenue.

Mountain Mike's Pizza in Georgetown has six big-screen televisions, an outdoor patio, a kids arcade and a weekday lunch buffet, according to a company news release.

Southwestern University sports stadium to open this fall

Southwestern University’s new multipurpose sports complex will open later this semester, university officials confirmed.

About the project: The philanthropy-funded sports complex is located on the site of the current football practice field, on the east side of the SU main campus. It includes a grandstand, stadium press box, synthetic turf field, locker room and concourse area.

Construction on the $9.2 million project began in January and will wrap up in time to host the Oct. 24 home football game vs. Rhodes College, according to university officials. Ahead of the game, SU will host on-campus tailgating for the first time beginning at 9:30 a.m., as well as a dedication ceremony to follow before kickoff at noon.

Something to note: The new stadium will bring back football to the SU campus for the first time since 1950, according to university documents. For the last several years, SU’s football program has played home games at a GISD facility.

It will also serve as a community center for other athletic teams and university events, including university commencement.

Texas lawmakers urge TxDOT to better communicate about road construction, closures

The Texas Department of Transportation manages over 200,000 miles of state highways. Roughly 72% of all vehicle travel in the state occurs on TxDOT-maintained highways, TxDOT Executive Director Marc Williams said.

As Texas’ population continues to grow, so does “demand on our transportation systems, from busy urban corridors to rural communities,” Williams told lawmakers during an Aug. 17 hearing held by the Texas House Transportation Committee.

What's happening: More than 11,000 TxDOT projects are currently in the works, according to the agency’s website.

To keep motorists informed about road construction, TxDOT collects public input during the project planning process, then conducts outreach on social media, on project websites and through email notifications before and during closures, according to Eric Lykins, TxDOT’s senior director of district operations. The agency also places electronic message signs on roadways ahead of closures or detours, he said.

Some state lawmakers are encouraging transportation officials to improve outreach to motorists when roads, lanes and exits are closed or adjusted.
