Medical City McKinney opens wing dedicated to treating rare skin condition

Medical City McKinney is operating a new wing dedicated to treating a rare and inflammatory skin condition with specialized care.

The overview: The hospital opened an 11-bed wing in January that’s dedicated to treating patients with advanced hidradenitis suppurativa, referred to as HS. The condition typically develops in armpits, inner thighs, breasts and groin areas, according to the US Food and Drug Administration.

Quote of note: Medical City McKinney CEO Mark Deno said the condition starts with an infected hair follicle that can create a wound with a “tunneling effect” under the skin. Medical City McKinney Nurse Manager Megan Palmer said it starts out looking like a pimple but it can tunnel below the skin as the condition progresses through three stages.

“What you see on the outside as a small acne area could really be a lot larger tunnelling under the skin,” Palmer said.

Dessert shop Cookie Society is coming soon to Richardson, owner Jeff Allen confirmed in an email.

Allen said the new location will “offer the full Cookie Society experience,” including the shop’s freshly-baked classic cookies, monthly rotating flavors and other dessert favorites like brownies and oatmeal cream pies.

“We’re especially excited about this location because it gives us an opportunity to serve the Richardson community, UTD students and staff and the surrounding neighborhoods,” Allen said. “Cookie Society is a family business here in North Texas, so continuing to grow throughout DFW is always special for us.”

Cookie Society currently operates locations in Prosper, Frisco, Southlake, Addison and Mansfield, and Allen said the Richardson location aims to open later this year.

Venetian village on the tollway advances to Prosper council

The Marco, a 143-acre proposed mixed-use development designed to mimic the feel of an Italian village on the northeast corner of Dallas North Tollway and US 380, is moving forward in Prosper.

In a nutshell: Conceptual plans for the development include a public square, retail, single-family and multifamily housing, a performing arts venue and a hotel, all centered around a lagoon with canals big enough to navigate by boat.

What happened: The Prosper Planning and Zoning Commission voted in favor of amending a previous planned development and rezoning the land from a commercial planned development to a mixed-use planned development at an Aug. 18 meeting. The commission recommended approval 4-2, with Chair Damon Jackson and Commissioner John Hamilton in opposition and Commissioner Brett Butler not in attendance.

Quote of note: “I know I’ll dominate the whole toll,” developer Jeffory Blackard said. “I’ll get the cream of the crop to come here because there’s nothing like this.”
