WilCo animal shelter receives state recognition for jail rehabilitation program

The Williamson County Regional Animal Shelter received a Governor’s Criminal Justice Volunteer Service Award for its Leashing Hope program.

Representatives with the shelter highlighted the program’s achievements at a Commissioners Court meeting April 21.

About the program: The Leashing Hope program is a collaboration between the WCRAS and the Bartlett State Jail’s Innovation Unit. It pairs incarcerated veterans with shelter dogs for positive reinforcement-based training.

The program is mutually beneficial for the shelter dogs and incarcerated individuals, preparing dogs for permanent homes, and fostering emotional healing and a sense of duty for the handlers, WCRAS officials said.

There are currently nine dogs paired with 18 handlers through the program. The inaugural class graduated five dogs in April 2025, according to county documents.

UT announces Dell Medical Center, Advanced Research Campus amid $750M Dell Foundation donation

A new medical center and advanced research campus is on track to open in Northwest Austin by 2030.

What happened: University of Texas at Austin officials announced the opening of the UT Dell Medical Center and UT Dell Campus for Advanced Research at an event April 21.

The new Dell Medical School facilities follow $750 million in new investments from the Michael & Susan Dell Foundation.

The details: The UT Dell Medical Center will encompass 27 acres of a 300-acre advanced research campus that is aimed to position Texas as a leading center for life sciences, according to UT information. Located near The Domain shopping center, the Campus for Advanced Research will absorb UT's current J.J. Pickle Research Campus.

The academic medical center will include a 300-to-500-bed hospital providing care for serious medical conditions, including cancer and cardiovascular disease.

Stay tuned: UT expects to break ground on the center in late 2026 for a targeted opening date of 2030, including a hospital tower, outpatient facilities and a full-service emergency department.

ERCOT forecasts quadruple growth in electric demand, warns estimate is likely overinflated

Demand on the Texas power grid could more than quadruple in the next six years, the Electric Reliability Council of Texas announced April 15.

The details: The state grid operator projected that peak electric demand could hit 367,790 megawatts by 2032—more than four times the current demand record of 85,508 megawatts, which was set during an August 2023 heat wave. Much of this forecasted growth is due to data centers, according to ERCOT documents.

However, ERCOT leaders warned that the growth forecast is “preliminary” and needs adjustments.

What's happening: During an April 17 meeting, ERCOT officials told the Public Utility Commission of Texas that they plan to work with utility providers to issue a revised forecast in the coming weeks.

“I think it's clear we need to engage in the process and look at ways to refine this number to something that's more usable,” PUC Chair Thomas Gleeson said.

Stay tuned: ERCOT said it expects peak electric demand on the grid this summer will hit between 90,500-98,000 megawatts, which would shatter the current demand record.
