The Sweet Swirl officials to celebrate August opening of Humble location

Officials with The Sweet Swirl are hosting a grand opening for the new location in Humble on Aug. 14, according to a post on the business’s Facebook page.

What they offer: The Sweet Swirl offers an assortment of sweet treats and snacks, including ice cream, slushies, frozen hot chocolate, floats, espresso and coffee, and milkshakes, per the website.

Check it out: Until the grand opening, the business is offering a 40% discount on all products during its soft-launch window, according to the business’s Facebook page

Kingwood Drive panel replacement
Project: Deteriorated concrete roadway panels will be removed and replaced along portions of Kingwood Drive between Mills Branch Drive and Willow Terrace Drive.
Update: Work began June 26 following weather-related delays, per a July 1 news release from Houston City Council member Fred Flickinger. Throughout the duration of the project, motorists should anticipate minor traffic impacts, including single-lane closures.

Northpark Drive overpass project
Project: Northpark Drive will be widened to a six-lane divided roadway between Hwy. 59 and Russell Palmer Road with an overpass.
Update: Traffic has been shifted onto the newly constructed surface lanes, allowing motorists to travel straight through from Hwy. 59 to Russell Palmer Road, Flickinger said in a June 30 newsletter.

Timber Forest Drive, Greens Road traffic light
Project: A new traffic signal will be installed at the intersection of Timber Forest Drive and Greens Road. The project aims to increase driver safety.
Update: Construction is underway and expected to wrap up within the third quarter of 2026.

Houston council member aims to lock down on unenclosed cargo loads while driving on city streets, highways

At-large council member Willie Davis has proposed a new amendment to an ordinance to establish local load securement standards for passenger cars and trucks in Houston after several incidents involving unsecured cargo posing a safety hazard to residents were reported or personally experienced.

Davis suggested the proposed ordinance during a Proposition A committee meeting July 28.

The specifics: The ordinance would require motor vehicles and/or any attached trailers to secure loads or cargo with a securement device of "sufficient strength" to prevent their loads from moving, thus preventing the cargo from ending up on the roads and/or highways, per the ordinance. The draft proposal also defines words listed in the ordinance, including load or cargo, securement device and moving.

Why it matters: A presentation at the committee meeting given by Davis noted that the objective of the amendment is to reduce the frequency of the type of public safety hazard that can lead to vehicular crashes caused by road debris.

Houston rental AC ordinance delayed after committee loses quorum

An ordinance which would close a decade-old loophole for Houston landlords regarding air conditioning got stuck in committee due to a lack of a quorum to move the item to the Houston City Council agenda on July 28.

What residents need to know: During the July 28 Prop A committee meeting, council member Alejandra Salinas said her proposal was aimed at ensuring a basic quality of life for renters in lower-income areas where rental properties may not have central cooling or window units.

The committee lost a quorum after nearly an hour of testimony in favor of the Right to Air Conditioning ordinance, which would no longer allow window screens to be the sole method of cooling in rental housing.

What’s next: Salinas said she would bring the ordinance back to the Prop A committee at the next meeting, which is scheduled for Aug. 25 at 2 p.m. in Houston City Council chambers.
