Lewisville, Argyle ISD extends winter weather closures

All campuses in Lewisville ISD and Argyle ISD will remain closed on Wednesday, Jan. 28 due to winter weather and unsafe road conditions, according to announcements from the districts.

The overview: Extracurricular activities, and campus events in LISD will be cancelled or rescheduled.

All after school activities in AISD have been cancelled and coaches and district staff will communicate any schedule changes to the community.

The announcements state that while temperatures have risen, there is still too much ice on the roads and sidewalks for district officials to feel safe.

Some background: LISD and AISD previously closed all campuses on Jan. 26 and 27 in response to freezing temperatures and unsafe road conditions.

Roads to see major improvement Tuesday, freezing fog expected mid-week in North Texas

The Dallas-Fort Worth area can expect roads to stay icy until Tuesday afternoon, according to the National Weather Service. 

The overview: While roads may have melted throughout the day Monday with sunny skies, the DFW metroplex won't see "long-lasting improvement" until Tuesday when highs are expected to be in the upper 30s and 40s, NWS meteorologist Brennen Darrah said. Some ice could linger though on backroads, which may not see improvement until Wednesday into Thursday, he said.

UPDATED: Winter Storm Fern continues to hamper flights at Dallas Love Field, DFW Airport

Dallas Fort Worth International Airport is still leading the way in canceled flights across the United States.

Zooming in: According to data provided by Flightaware.com, DFW Airport had 841 cancellations between departing and arriving flights on Jan. 26, up from 625 earlier in the morning.


Nationwide, DFW Airport accounts for 16% of the canceled flights. In addition, 614 flights at DFW Airport are listed as delayed. Data from Flightaware.com shows the average delay in departures is 54 minutes.

Also of note: At Dallas Love Field, there have been 84 cancellations and 173 flight delays. Love Field is averaging 52 minutes for delayed departures, according to the website.

Stay tuned: Fort Worth-based American Airlines has 1,197 flights cancelled across the country and 1,147 delayed.

UPDATED: Denton ISD announces Wednesday school closure

Update: Jan. 27, 2:50 p.m.
Denton ISD schools will be closed Wednesday, Jan. 28, due to icy weather conditions, officials posted on the district's website.

The details: All before- and after-school activities have been cancelled, and district officials will continue to monitor the weather in coordination with local officials, the district message states.

The next update from officials will address school operation and instruction for Thursday, Jan. 29.
