Denton officials announced the city's streets department will conduct a road resurfacing project across multiple city streets through the month of September.

What’s happening?: According to a city release, the project began Sept. 9 and will continue through Sept. 29. The project will result in some road closures on both residential streets and major roadways.

The specifics: The project, which includes a micro-surfacing process of the road's top surface, will be broken down into four phases:

• First phase: Sept. 9-12, impacting 20 roads

• Second phase: Sept. 14-19, affecting 30 roads

• Third phase: Sept. 21-25, including 13 roads

• Fourth phase: Sept. 28-29, affecting one road

WaveMax Laundry, a self-service laundry business, opened its first Denton location off East University Drive at the end of August, owner Jarrod Tallman said.

The details: WaveMax Laundry offers a variety of services, including self washing and drying; drop-off services where WaveMax employees wash, dry and fold laundry; and commercial laundry services for gyms, rentals, medical offices and salons in the area.

Other amenities include a drop-off service, text alerts, 24-hour security surveillance and available snacks and soap, according to the company website.

Jarrod and Elizabeth Tallman said opening a WaveMax Laundry in Denton was personal for them. Elizabeth Tallman is a University of North Texas alumna and Jarrod Tallman said he fell in love with the community.

“As a veteran, I've been fortunate to live and work in a lot of places, but Denton is one of those rare towns where you can feel the character the moment you get here,” he said.

The Texas comptroller's office is requesting that lawmakers provide more than $2 billion for the second and third years of the state's education savings account program, which gives participating families taxpayer dollars for private education and homeschooling.

How we got here: The legislature created Texas Education Freedom Accounts in 2025 and allocated $1 billion for the program's first year, the 2026-27 school year.

Nearly 110,000 students have received state dollars from the program so far, and officials said providing another $1 billion annually would ensure the state can "maintain our current participation" in the next two years.

Zooming in: According to the comptroller's legislative appropriations request for the 2028-29 biennium, it would cost approximately $4 billion to maintain funding for current participants, accept the siblings of participating children who will soon qualify for the program and admit more than 106,000 waitlisted students.

Something to note: The comptroller's $2 billion base budget request would not fully cover the waitlist and interest list, which would cost nearly $4 billion for the 2027-28 and 2028-29 school years.
