The Container Store closes Spring-Klein area location

The Container Store has closed a location in the Spring-Klein area, according to a note on the storefront's door. The note encouraged customers to visit one of three other stores in the area or to shop online.

What they offer: The Container Store specializes in organizational items for homes, offices, travel and more. It also offers an in-home organizing service and free in-store design consultations.

Also of note: The closed location was also home to Bed Bath & Beyond, which sells furniture, rugs, bedding, decor and home improvement items. The two companies launched co-branded retail locations in May after announcing a merger.

Klein ISD maintains flat tax rate

The Klein ISD Board of Trustees unanimously voted during its Oct. 5 regular meeting to maintain a flat property tax rate of $1.0119 per $100 of home valuation. According to a district official, this rate is the lowest for the district in 34 years.

The details: Key details from the decision and the district's financial outlook include:

  • Taxes for the average residence are estimated at $1,930, representing a $7.49 increase from last year due to a rise in the average taxable value of residences to $190,730. Individual property tax bills vary based on home appraisal value.

  • The district is estimated to bring in $5,854 in local revenue per student and $8,011 in state revenue per student.

  • State revenue per student will decrease by an estimated $326 from the previous year.

Also of note: Additionally, the board approved an academic calendar for the 2027-28 school year, setting the first day of school for Aug. 11, 2027 and the last day for May 26, 2028.

Auto shop Midas opens in Klein

Automotive service and tire shop Midas opened a Klein location Aug. 24 at 7511 Louetta Road.

The details: Although Midas is a statewide franchise, this location is locally owned by dad-and-daughter duo Doug and Selena Wicklund. Most Midas shops are located in the Greater Houston and Austin regions.

Selena Wicklund said the Klein location is a full-service automotive shop. The services offered at the shop include:

  • Wheel suspension and alignment

  • Brake inspections and repair

  • Oil changes

  • Tire sales and repair

Experts: Hardening homes against disasters could drive down Texas home insurance costs

The average annual insurance premium for a Texas homeowner rose 79% in six years, from less than $2,000 in 2020 to more than $3,500 this year, Texas Insurance Commissioner Amanda Crawford told state lawmakers Oct. 5.

The overview: The rise in home insurance costs has been caused by severe weather, high inflationary costs impacting home repairs and "the concentration of risk" in the insurance market, Crawford said.

Experts said hardening homes against severe weather could help reduce expensive losses from disasters, resulting in lower insurance premiums.

Zooming in: Proponents of home-hardening incentives have pointed to their success in other Gulf Coast states, such as Alabama. Texas consumer advocacy groups and the insurance industry backed proposals to create a similar grant program last year, according to previous Community Impact reporting, but those measures did not pass.

"Resilience helps homeowners long before it shows up in an insurance bill because a stronger home holds up better when the storm comes," said Chelsea Stallings, a regional vice president for the National Association of Mutual Insurance Companies.
