Humble ISD pushes new programs to improve college, career and military readiness scores

Humble ISD officials are putting new systems and support programs in place to raise the district’s college, career and military readiness scores in future Texas Education Agency accountability ratings.

The big picture: Melissa Leigh, HISD senior director of personalized student success, presented trustees with an overview of the district’s efforts during the board’s Oct. 21 meeting. While Leigh said HISD was behind the state in some CCMR measures in this year’s ratings, she said officials implemented multiple programs in 2024-25 that are expected to improve results for the district’s 2025-26 accountability ratings.

Breaking it down: According to district data, HISD’s score for total CCMR criteria came out 62% for the 2024-25 school year—20 percentage points behind the state average of 82%.

What's being done: Among the new programs implemented in the 2024-25 school year include Texas College Bridge, which Leigh said provides college prep courses that can help students avoid having to take remedial coursework at more than 100 partner colleges and institutions.

Dallas, Houston airports required to reduce operations Nov. 7 under FAA order

Airports in Dallas and Houston are required to begin reducing flights and other operations by 4% on Nov. 7 in response to air traffic controller shortages caused by the federal government shutdown, transportation officials announced Nov. 6.

The details: The cuts will affect 40 "high impact airports" across the country, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation and the Federal Aviation Administration. The affected Texas airports include:

  • Dallas Love Field (DAL)
  • Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport (DFW)
  • William P. Hobby Airport (HOU)
  • George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH)
Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (ABIA) and San Antonio International Airport (SAT) are not required to reduce operations.

How we got here: The restrictions come as the federal government shutdown surpassed the five-week mark Nov. 5, making it the longest shutdown in U.S. history after Congress missed an Oct. 1 deadline on negotiations to fund the government.

Federal employees, including air traffic controllers, are not paid while the government is shut down. This has led to staffing shortages across the country, according to USDOT.
