Fried chicken joint The Cookshack permanently closed in Spring

The Cookshack, a fast-casual fried chicken eatery, has permanently shuttered its doors on Kuykendahl Road in Spring.

About the business: The Fort Worth-based business opened its Spring location in 2022, according to Community Impact. The restaurant specialized in Southern comfort food including fried chicken, baby back ribs, chicken and waffles and macaroni and cheese, per its menu.

Also of note: The Cookshack also permanently closed its other Houston-area locations, including on Washington Avenue in Houston, Katy and Webster, online listings show.

The Tooth Lodge dental clinic to open in Klein

Local dental clinic The Tooth Lodge will soon open its doors in the Klein community near FM 2920 and TC Jester Boulevard.

At a glance: The Tooth Lodge can be found north of FM 2920 near Klein Crossing. Run by Houston native Dr. Afreen Ansari, the clinic will begin seeing patients in June, per its website. 

What they offer: The Tooth Lodge offers family and cosmetic dentistry services, with membership plans available for patients without insurance, according to the clinic's website. Available treatments also include traditional dentures, endodontics, wisdom teeth extraction, laser dentistry and same-day emergency care.

Another detail: New patients without insurance also qualify for a complimentary cosmetic consultation, which includes an AI smile design mock-up and personalized treatment plan, according to the business.

Zipline Drone Delivery first Houston flight launches in Cypress 

Zipline Drone Delivery launched the first Houston-area flight in Cypress with plans to expand to more Houston neighborhoods in the coming weeks, per an April 29 news release. Community Engagement Lead Zach Hill said while Zipline's first focus is to deliver food and groceries in partnership with local businesses, the company will soon expand its services to aid the health care system in Houston.

What you need to know: As of April 29, 5,000 select Houstonians have access to Zipline services delivering groceries, meals and retail items, per the release. Utilizing the Zipline app, officials said select Houstonians can order from the following local businesses:

  • Chipotle

  • Anothai Cuisine

  • Boba Smoothies

  • Andaluz


The impact: Hill said Zipline first launched in 2014 to deliver blood to rural areas, saving over 10,000 lives annually as a result. Further advancing health care responsiveness, the company is licensed to deliver prescriptions in Texas. However, Hill said Zipline is working to get further regulatory approval from local officials.

What to know before heading to the polls for Texas’ May 26 runoff election

Dozens of federal, state and local primary campaigns will come to a close May 26 as Texas voters cast ballots in the Republican and Democratic runoff elections.

How it works: Texas held its primary elections in March, with some races advancing to an overtime round, known as a runoff, after no single candidate picked up more than half of the vote.

On May 26, voters may see statewide offices, state legislative seats, redrawn congressional districts, the State Board of Education and county-level positions on their ballots. The winner of each runoff race will appear on the Nov. 3 ballot.

At the polls: Polling places across Texas will be open from 7 a.m.-7 p.m. May 26. Voters in the following counties in Community Impact’s coverage areas can vote at any polling location within their county of residence: Bastrop, Bexar, Brazoria, Brazos, Collin, Comal, Fort Bend, Galveston, Guadalupe, Harris, Hays, Tarrant, Travis and Williamson.

Registered voters in other counties are required to visit a polling place specific to their voting precinct.
