Q&A: The National Council on Aging gives tips on how to handle finances for aging adults

The National Council on Aging, or NCOA, began in 1950 and provides resources and advocacy for the U.S.’s aging population, with the goal of improving the health and financial readiness of 40 million older Americans by 2030, according to its website.

Ebony P. White is the NCOA director of economic security and social safety net initiatives, with 15 years of experience in the field, according to NCOA's website.

In an email to Community Impact, White answered questions about best practices for senior community members and tips for financial literacy as adults age.

Top Golf opens 100th US location in New Braunfels

Topgolf has officially opened in New Braunfels, marking the golf chain’s 100th location in the United States.

In case you missed it: Topgolf officially opened on Dec. 5 at 427 Creekside Way, staff at the new location told Community Impact.

The two-story golfing and entertainment facility contains 62 climate-controlled hitting bays, a private event space and a nine-hole mini golf course, a news release from the business states.

There’s also a bar, restaurant, lessons, Toptracer games and more available to customers.

Quote of note: Erin Chamberlin, Topgolf's chief operating officer and interim president, said they were excited to mark this momentous occasion in the New Braunfels community.

"Opening our 100th U.S. venue in New Braunfels is more than a milestone, it's a celebration of the fun, energy and innovation that makes Topgolf unlike any other entertainment experience out there,” Chamberlin said in the release.

Sprouts Farmers Market announces opening date of Jan. 23 in New Braunfels

This nationwide grocer has set the opening date for its newest location, the first of its kind in Comal County.

The overview: Sprouts Farmers Market is officially opening on Jan. 23 at 275 Creekside Crossing, the company announced in a Nov. 5 news release.

It’s situated in the city’s growing Creekside Crossing shopping development, where other large chains like Texas Roadhouse and Topgolf have expanded in the last year, according to previous Community Impact reporting.

Long story short: The market will offer a variety of organic produce, meats, grocery items and more.

It’s set up like a traditional farmers' market, with a produce section in the center of the store, according to the release.

On the shelves are a variety of plant-based, keto, dairy-free and gluten-free products.

The Phoenix-based supermarket chain will bring approximately 92 jobs to the area, according to the release.

Texas medical cannabis program expands to include 9 potential new dispensaries

Nine new medical cannabis dispensaries could soon open in Texas, the Department of Public Safety announced Dec. 1.

The overview: The nine companies were preliminarily approved to join three existing dispensaries that provide medical-grade, low-THC products to eligible patients through the Texas Compassionate Use Program. The program's expansion comes after state lawmakers passed House Bill 46 this spring.

Lawmakers also allowed dispensaries to store products in multiple locations, which advocates said would cut costs, and added more qualifying conditions to the program.

  • Trulieve TX Inc. in the Panhandle
  • Texas Patient Access LLC in North Texas
  • Lonestar Compassionate Care Group LLC in North Texas
  • Lone Star Bioscience Inc. in South Central Texas
  • PC TX OPCO LLC, dba PharmaCann, in Southeast Texas
  • Texa OP, dba TexaRx, in the Rio Grande Valley
  • Story of Texas LLC in Southeast Texas
  • Dilatso LLC in North Texas 

The companies must pass a final evaluation before they can cultivate, manufacture, distribute or sell products.
