Humble ISD approves academic calendar for 2026-27 school year

Humble ISD trustees approved the district's 2026-27 academic calendar at the Jan. 13 board meeting.

The overview: According to the new calendar, classes will begin Aug. 12 and end May 28. Officials also noted the district will continue to implement weeklong breaks in October and February in addition to Thanksgiving, winter and spring breaks.

A closer look: For the 2025-26 school year, the breaks will fall on the following dates:

  • October break: Oct. 12-16
  • Thanksgiving break: Nov. 23-27
  • Winter break: Dec. 21, 2026-Jan. 1, 2027
  • February break: Feb. 8-12, 2027
  • Spring break: March 15-19, 2027

Additional student holidays include:
  • Labor Day: Sept. 7
  • Staff workday: Nov. 3
  • Martin Luther King Jr. Day: Jan. 18, 2027
  • Good Friday: March 26, 2027
  • Memorial Day: May 31, 2027

Officials noted elementary students will have additional holidays on:
  • Sept. 28
  • Feb. 15, 2027
  • May 21, 2027

Construction on Mister Car Wash in Humble projected to begin in May

Construction on a Mister Car Wash location in Humble is projected to begin in May, according to a Dec. 4 filing with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation.

The details: The roughly $2.5 million project will consist of the construction of a new facility containing a tunnel car wash, per the filing.

What they offer: Mister Car Wash offers drive-thru car washes as well as interior car cleaning services, and has locations across the U.S., according to the company's website.

What's next: While an opening date was not included in the filing, construction is expected to wrap up in February 2027.

Houston City Council extends early childhood education program with $100K grant

Houston’s Infant and Early Childhood Development Enrichment Program will receive $100,000 more in funding to help children from low- to moderate-income families after Houston City Council approved the grant Jan. 14.

The overview: The additional $100,000 will fund education and support for young children through the program until Nov. 30. The program is a collaboration between the city and nonprofit Child Care Council of Greater Houston Inc., and is funded through the city’s Community Development Block Grant.

Learn more: The Infant and Early Childhood Development Enrichment Program provides:

  • Care and development services for infants and children ages 0-5 years old
  • Services for young parents experiencing homelessness via the support organization Covenant House Texas
  • Information and resources for parents and families involved in the program
  • Early childhood education services, including collaboration with parents and families
