Round Rock ISD provides firearm locks to community members through federal grant

Round Rock ISD-area community members need only send an email to receive a free firearm lock, district staff said in February.

Why now? In January, the district's police department began offering firearm locks to community members in the district's digital newsletter. District staff said community members can either email a request to the Round Rock ISD Police Department at [email protected], or visit any high school campus during working hours and ask to speak to a school resource officer to receive a gun lock.

How we got here: Last April, RRISDPD Chief Ryan Urrutia shared a proposal for a grant that would allow the district to purchase 12,000 to 15,000 firearm locks, cable locks and trigger locks to provide to district families to ensure any firearms kept in the household are secure.

Scheels targets an August opening for new Cedar Park location

Scheels announced on its website that the company will host a grand opening at its Cedar Park location on Aug. 29.

The gist: The 300,000-square-foot store will feature 75 specialty shops, a 65-foot indoor Ferris wheel, a 16,000-gallon saltwater aquarium and Ginna’s Café which will serve soups and sandwiches.

Learn more: The sporting goods store will be located in the 117-acre CedarView development, according to previous Community Impact reporting.

The surrounding retail district will feature a mix of local and regional shops, restaurants and possibly entertainment venues. Another fixture of the development will be NFM, formerly Nebraska Furniture Mart.

Zooming out: The Cedar Park Scheels will be the company’s second Texas location. The employee-owned store launched its original Lone Star location in the Dallas area in 2020, according to its website.
