Missouri City approves $15K incentive for new police officers

Missouri City staff is looking for ways to attract more police officers.

The overview: At an Oct. 5 meeting, Missouri City City Council approved an incentive plan that gives each new officer a $15,000 bonus—up from the $10,000 incentive plan approved in 2024.

The incentive increase comes as agencies nationwide struggle with retaining and hiring officers, according to agenda documents.

By the numbers: This year, Missouri City is on track to hit the lowest number of peak vacancies of the past three years with 17 vacant positions, Police Chief Troy R. Finner said. Currently, the department has 12 vacancies.

Looking ahead: City officials can terminate the incentive program once the department is fully staffed or if funding runs out, per agenda documents.
