Q&A: Tomball’s new assistant city manager shares priorities for first year in role

The city of Tomball appointed Sakura Moten as its new assistant city manager following a Nov. 3 City Council meeting, and she officially began the role Nov. 17, as previously reported by Community Impact.

Moten, who brings more than 20 years of experience in municipal administration, finance, technology and organizational development, recently shared what drew her to Tomball and the priorities she plans to focus on in her first year as the city continues to balance growth with long-term planning. 

What drew you to the role of assistant city administrator in Tomball, and what excites you most about serving this community?
What drew me to Tomball is its strong sense of identity—it’s a community that values its history while being very intentional about its future.

Tomball West High School hires inaugural campus athletic coordinator, head football coach

On Jan. 16, Tomball ISD officially announced the hiring of James Williams as Tomball West High School’s inaugural campus athletic coordinator and head football coach.

The breakdown: As previously reported by Community Impact, Tomball West High School is the latest campus constructed by TISD. The campus is scheduled to open next semester in August 2026.

According to a news release, James Williams brings nearly three decades of coaching experience. His previous position was as head football coach and campus athletic coordinator at Thurgood Marshall High School in Fort Bend ISD. He served the campus for 16 years, and brought the team to their most successful era in the program's history.

Quote of note: Kevin Williams, the current principal of Tomball West High School, spoke highly of James Williams, celebrating his knowledge and culture-setting standards.

“Coach Williams is an established program builder and proven winner whose leadership, vision and commitment to developing students make him the ideal choice to help shape the gold standard identity of Tomball West athletics,” Kevin Williams said in a statement.

Voters in Texas House of Representatives District 126 will have the opportunity to vote for a representative in March. The incumbent, Rep. Sam Harless, R-Spring, announced his retirement by the end of his term in 2027. Harless has held his seat since Jan. 8, 2019.

What you need to know: District 126 covers parts of Harris County, including Cypress, Spring, Fairbanks and Jersey Village, according to a map of the district.

Early voting begins Feb. 17, and election day is March 3.

Two candidates for Texas House of Representatives District 3 will appear on the ballot for both the Democratic and Republican primaries on election day.

The details: District 3 covers portions of Magnolia and Montgomery County. The seat is currently held by Rep. Cecil Bell Jr., R-Magnolia, who was elected to the position in 2013.

Primary early voting begins Feb. 17, and election day is March 3. The winners of the Democratic and Republican primaries will face off in the general election in November.
