Roundabout discussions continue for Blakey Lane extension

The Goodman Corporation, an Austin-based civil engineering firm, provided Bastrop City Council with an update on potential roundabout designs as part of the Blakey Lane extension project during an Oct. 21 meeting.

The details: Two roundabout options were discussed:

  • A single-lane roundabout
  • A compact roundabout with bypass lanes

“This is way more complicated, but we could look at adding what we call bypass lanes,” Jake Gutekunst, an engineer with The Goodman Corporation, said during the meeting. “If someone was coming off Hwy. 71 and they just wanted to get on Old Austin Highway and not deal with this, this would allow for a lane to go north and turn right and avoid the whole thing.”

Bastrop Assistant City Manager Andres Rosales emphasized that both designs are just concepts.

“I want to make that very clear, even to the public,” he said during the meeting. “This is just a discussion. We’re not constructing this tomorrow.”

Zoning change for Crossings at 95 development in Bastrop delayed

Bastrop city officials tabled a zoning change for the Crossings at 95 development—a project that aims to build dozens of residential units and multiunit townhomes as well as a 4,000-square-foot restaurant, according to city documents.

The details: Although the zoning change was placed on the agenda for an Oct. 21 meeting, James Cowey, Bastrop’s director of development services, told Bastrop City Council that the item won’t come to a vote until a Dec. 9 meeting.

Some context: Paradise Engineers is designing the project for Iron Realty.

The nearly 7.4-acre property at 2002 Hwy. 95, Bastrop, which is currently vacant, is east of the Public Works Department and south of the Bastrop Youth Baseball and Softball Organization’s fields.

Although developers do not need a zoning change from an employment center designation to move forward with their current plans, officials said they are seeking a planned development district designation to better partner with the city.

A new metroplex: Local officials discuss growing I-35 corridor at annual summit

The 2025 Austin-San Antonio Growth Summit kicked off on Oct. 8, highlighting the current growth and future expansion of business and development along the I-35 corridor.

Hundreds of business owners, regional officials and lawmakers attended the event in San Marcos.

The outlook: Henry Cisneros, former San Antonio mayor and 10th United States Secretary of Housing and Urban Development, began the summit by detailing what the region could look like by 2050.

“What we’re living through is quantitatively different than any generation has seen before,”
he said.

By 2050, Cisneros said the population in the Austin and San Antonio metroplex is projected to grow from 5.3 million to 8.3 million.

Even by 2030, the population in the area is expected to grow to 6 million or 7 million, according to the Greater Austin-San Antonio Corridor Council.

Between 2023 and 2024 alone, data from the U.S. Census Bureau showed that San Antonio grew by 23,945 residents.
