Georgetown ISD rezones Wolf Ranch Elementary to relieve overcrowding in 2026-27

Some Wolf Ranch Elementary students will begin attending Frost and San Gabriel elementaries this fall.

The big picture: The board of trustees approved new attendance zones at a Feb. 17 meeting. The rezoning is intended to relieve overcrowding at Wolf Ranch while maximizing the existing open capacity at the smaller elementary campuses, Chief of Strategic Operations Lannon Heflin said.

The impact: The new attendance zones will increase enrollment at San Gabriel by about 150 students to 527 students and raise Frost Elementary's enrollment by nearly 100 students to 511 students, according to district documents. Both campuses are designed to accommodate a capacity of 850 students.

Meanwhile, Wolf Ranch's enrollment will decrease by more than 250 students. With an enrollment of 947 students, the campus is currently over its 850-student capacity by almost 100 students, district data shows.

In case you missed it: In early February, Superintendent Devin Padavil announced his decision to delay opening Ames Elementary and Middle School No. 5 until the 2027-28 school year.

New LCRA reservoir could add 13B gallons to Central Texas water supply

The Lower Colorado River Authority is conducting studies to determine if a site northwest of Eagle Lake in Colorado County would be suitable for a new, larger water reservoir.

The details: LCRA already owns the 2,000-acre site, which could add over 13 billion gallons to the Central Texas water supply amid growing water needs.

Two-minute impact: The river authority, which supplies water and hydroelectric power to many communities throughout Central Texas, is exploring plans to build a new reservoir that could hold up to 90,000 acre feet of water. That would make it larger than the recently opened Arbuckle Reservoir, or two to three times the capacity of Lake Travis.

Why now? A new reservoir off the river authority's main channel was established in its Water Supply Resource Report, an overview of strategies to address regional water needs, that was approved last year, according to a Feb. 19 news release.

UT Medical Center shifts from downtown to Northwest Austin

Officials confirmed Feb. 18 that the University of Texas Medical Center will be located in Northwest Austin rather than at the former Erwin Center site downtown.

What they're saying: “As our two institutions continued to work collaboratively over the last year, it became apparent that the proposed Erwin Center location would not be as conducive to the fully integrated, patient-centered approach that was being envisioned, and there would be limits to future growth on that,” UT Board of Regents chairman Kevin Eltife said at a Feb. 18 board meeting.

The details: The new site, anchored by Dell Medical School, will be located west of the J.J. Pickle Research Campus on university-owned land in Northwest Austin, although a specific site was not confirmed. Of the several university-owned plots of land in the area, one holds The Shops at Arbor Walk, while another has part of the Braker Lane Crossing shopping center.

The medical center still plans to open in 2030, despite the new location, and will still be in partnership with MD Anderson.
