Prosper's 4th fire station now open, aims to reduce emergency response times

A new fire station is officially operational in east Prosper.

What happened: Town officials, community members and members of the Prosper Fire Department gathered April 28 to celebrate the opening of Fire Station No. 4, located at 3980 E. Prosper Trail. The new 12,212-square-foot facility is expected to improve emergency response times in the area.

The details: Fire Chief Stuart Blasingame said the new station will help reduce emergency response times in parts of east Prosper by as much as six to eight minutes compared to previous coverage areas. Blasingame pointed to a recent call for service, noting that if the response had come from Fire Station No. 3, it would have taken five to six minutes to reach the scene. Instead, crews from Fire Station No. 4 were able to get there in less than two minutes.

“That can absolutely be the difference between life and death,” Blasingame said.

One more thing: Blasingame said the department began staffing the station in early April with nine personnel, with staffing expected to phase in over time.

American Airlines celebrates 100th anniversary

Fort Worth-based American Airlines celebrated its 100th anniversary on April 15.

The first flight for the company was on a DH-4 biplane with a bag of mail, headed from Chicago to St. Louis, according to the airline’s website. Charles A. Lindbergh, the chief pilot of Robertson Aircraft Corporation, was the pilot of that trip. Robertson was one of the airlines that ultimately became American Airlines.

The background: What started as American Airways, the first operation building and hangar was at Fort Worth Meacham International Airport, which was once the headquarters of American Airlines at 201 Aviation Way, and is on the National Register of Historic Places. According to the airline’s historical timeline, the company changed its name to American Airlines, Inc., in 1934.

According to its website, American Airlines operated the first plane to land at Dallas Fort Worth International Airport in 1974. The headquarters moved from New York City to Fort Worth in 1979 and American established its first hub at Dallas Fort Worth International Airport in 1981.
