Frisco swears in new mayor
Frisco’s new Mayor Mark Hill was sworn into office July 7.

Fourth Street Plaza to open in August in Frisco's Rail District
The Rail District construction is nearing completion in Frisco. The Fourth Street Plaza is the last major construction milestone for the project, which is expected to be completed by the end of August, Assistant Director of Engineering Matt DuBois said during an update at council’s July 7 meeting.

Northwest Community Park to open this fall
Northwest Community Park is now set to open in September. The park, originally expected to open in June, was discussed during a July 7 work session as construction continues to progress at the site. It is located off Teel and Fields parkways. 

The Imperial Room is taking over the space that once housed Cow Tipping Creamery at The Star.

What you need to know: PILF Restaurant Group, which is a Dallas-based hospitality company, is opening the new concept cocktail lounge in early September, according to a company news release. The group is also behind Can Rosso, Zoli’s Pizza and Thunderbird Pies. It was also behind Cow Tipping Creamery at The Star.

Quote of note: “We've loved being part of The Star for the last 10 years, and Cow Tipping Creamery created a lot of great memories for our guests," PILF Group’s founder/owner Jay Jerrier said in the news release. "But ice cream is an incredibly seasonal business, and we've wanted to create a cocktail lounge for a long time. The Imperial Room gives us the opportunity to build something completely different.”

Southwest Airlines celebrates the 55th anniversary of its first flight on June 18.
The Dallas-based airline’s first revenue flight departed from Dallas Love Field on June 18, 1971, bound for San Antonio, according to the company’s website.

The background: The company was founded by Herb Kelleher, filing with the state of Texas to establish Air Southwest Co. on March 9, 1967. A legal battle followed until the Supreme Court ruled in favor of Kelleher and Rollin King in December of 1970 to clear the way to start operations. The company changed its name to Southwest Airlines Co. on March 29, 1971.
Initially, the company only flew routes within Texas, but now has 52 destinations listed from Dallas Love Field. According to the website, Southwest now operates out of 121 airports across 12 countries.

What else? Southwest Airlines had more than 134 million customers in 2025, according to its website.
