The second phase of the Harvey Road Corridor Redevelopment Plan, a roadmap to turn the area into a mixed-use business and residential development, will focus on more community engagement and input.

What you need to know: While in the works for over a decade, the first phase of planning for the project officially began at a launch party at College Station City Hall in June.

With the first phase concentrating more on communication and marketing efforts, the second phase is set to focus on these objectives:

• A community survey, including public comment on the website and pop-ups throughout various locations in College Station with student engagement on Texas A&M University’s campus

• Workshops and three working group meetings to gather in-depth feedback from community residents

What’s next: Principal Planner Heather Wade said that anyone who visits the Harvey Road area can provide feedback and they do not have to live in College Station.

Along with public input, the city has brought on a consultant to work on a market analysis for the planning area.

Texas A&M University will receive a grant from the state to help continue training for cybersecurity and artificial intelligence workforce development.

The gist: According to a news release, the goal of boosting the programs is to help “protect critical infrastructure as instances of cyberattacks from foreign adversaries continue to increase.” The cybersecurity program at the university has been ranked among the top on several national lists and operates as part of the nationally recognized College of Engineering.

The CHIPs and Science Act was signed into law in 2022 to boost semiconductor manufacturing and computer-related research, and Texas Sen. John Cornyn voted in favor of it.

The takeaway: Many grants have been awarded to institutions around the state, including millions to promote semiconductor manufacturing programs and facilities. Texas A&M being the newest recipient of funds means the university can continue building its cybersecurity programs and contributing to an ever-expanding workforce in that industry.
