Richardson officials sign Friendship City agreement with Keelung City, Taiwan

Richardson officials established a Friendship City relationship with Keelung City, Taiwan June 24, creating a framework for educational, cultural and economic cooperation between the two cities.

The overview: Richardson Mayor Amir Omar and Keelung City Mayor Kuo-Liang Hsieh signed a memorandum of understanding in front of Richardson City Council members, city staff, a delegation from Keelung City and members of the Greater Dallas Taiwanese Chamber of Commerce.

Omar said Richardson and Keelung City, a major port city located near capital city Taipei, share “a deep belief in innovation, in education [and] in investing in the next generation.”

“As Taiwan’s international harbor getaway, Keelung enjoys a strategic location and well-developed maritime and land transportation networks,” Hsieh said through a translator. “In recent years, we have actively advanced port development, urban revitalization and tourist enhancement.”

How we got here: Charles Ku, honorary president of the Greater Dallas Taiwanese Chamber of Commerce, said he has advocated for Richardson to establish a sister city agreement with a Taiwanese city for 30 years.

Stars align in Plano: $3 billion NHL arena, entertainment district planned for Willow Bend

The Dallas Stars will soon call Plano home.

The gist: The National Hockey League team plans to move from Dallas to a new arena at The Shops at Willow Bend. Plano City Council approved a nonbinding letter of intent from Dallas Sports & Entertainment LP, the Stars’ parent company, on June 8, clearing the way for the move.

The arena will host the Stars home games, practices and camps, along with “other indoor sports, entertainment, cultural and civic events,” according to the letter. Also planned is a surrounding “mixed-use entertainment district,” developed by current property owners Centennial.

Why it matters: The $3 billion development will attempt to create a power play for the mall that some say has been skating on thin ice.

“If you look at Willow Bend Mall now, it’s basically dead,” council member Rick Horne said. “Now we have this opportunity to bring a top notch sports entity here, and it will continue to make the city vibrant.”
