Construction on a new Tacos La Bala location is expected to begin in September and wrap up by Jan. 30, per a July 28 Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation filing. 

On the menu: Tacos La Bala serves Mexican cuisine, including staples such as burritos, tortas, tacos and quesadillas.

Some context: The eatery has seven locations across the Greater Houston area, and offers a casual dining ambiance, take out and delivery services, per the website. The new restaurant will be located in a 2,482-square-foot building per the TDLR filing.

When the AABY Foundation was initially established by Kay Pass in New Caney in 2004, one of the nonprofit’s missions was to help seniors provide veterinary services for their animals, said Kerri Larson, the foundation’s medical coordinator.

Several years and thousands of vaccinations later, Larson said the nonprofit has expanded from just helping seniors to helping anyone in need of their services.

The details: Larson said the need for the foundation partially stemmed from low vaccination rates for pets across East Montgomery County.

A closer look: To help combat the issue, the foundation hosts low-cost vaccination clinics that are open to the public on the first Sunday of June and December every year at Bull Salas Park in New Caney.

How to help: Larson added the clinics are reliant on volunteers to help ensure they run smoothly. 

Also of note: The nonprofit also operates the AABY Thrift Shop, with proceeds taken in directly benefiting the foundation’s biannual clinics. Larson said the foundation also travels to homeless camps to help unhoused individuals care for their animals.

Montgomery County commissioners got a look Aug. 6 at a roughly $537.3 million preliminary budget for fiscal year 2026-27, with several days of budget workshops set to begin Aug. 11.

The preliminary budget, filed July 27, totals $537,298,232, an increase of about $29.2 million from the county’s $508.1 million adopted FY 2025-26 budget. Budget Officer Amanda Carter said the proposal was built around the county’s current tax rate of $0.3770 per $100 valuation and includes about $6.28 million in unallocated funding that commissioners can direct toward priorities during workshops.

A closer look: Priorities include employee step increases, continued funding for the detention officer pay program, increased employee health insurance costs and startup expenses for the new 523rd District Court. The county is budgeting a $19,000 employer insurance contribution per employee, up from $18,450, as discussed.

By the numbers: County departments requested 103 new positions totaling about $12.8 million, although Carter stressed those requests are not necessarily included in the preliminary budget.

Biopharmaceutical company Bristol Myers Squibb has selected Generation Park for its new $2.3 billion manufacturing campus, officials announced in an Aug. 10 news release. The project is expected to bring nearly 500 jobs to the Lake Houston area.

The big picture: The state-of-the-art 600,000-square-foot campus will enable BMS to manufacture multiple types of medicines, such as small molecules, biologics and antibody-drug conjugates. Per the release, the campus will be modular and multimodal to support long-term growth and allow the campus to evolve as needed.

The impact: Jobs created by the new campus will include operations technicians, production specialists, maintenance and engineering professionals, quality control and assurance experts, and site leadership and administration. Per the release, BMS also expects to create approximately 2,000 construction and other indirect jobs between 2027-30, while the facility is built.

Some context: Community Impact first reported BMS was considering Generation Park for a new manufacturing campus in May.
