Montgomery County Food Bank announced its inaugural Flourish & Nourish Ladies Luncheon, a signature event for women in Montgomery County to prevent hunger.

Community mural finds permanent home at Canopy Cancer Survivorship Center

The collaborative mural "A Community in Bloom," created by attendees of The Woodlands Waterway Arts Festival weekend in April, is now on permanent exhibit at Canopy Cancer Survivorship Center at Memorial Hermann The Woodlands Medical Center. The project stemmed from a call for artists from The Woodlands Art League to design an interactive community project for the arts festival, according to a news release.

The Woodlands Arts Council and The Woodlands Township are collaborating on a project to bring public art installations to the township's trolley shelters.

What you need to know: The project will include installations created by professional artists to bring digitally printed glass art panels to up to eight shelters.

What else: The shelters will showcase original artwork printed directly onto durable laminated glass and are intended to create a unique experience for residents and visitors who travel through The Woodlands Waterway and Town Center on the trolleys each year, according to a news release.

Walmart on July 23 announced a multiyear workforce development grant in Houston aimed at helping workers in several communities prepare for higher-quality career opportunities over the next five years, according to a news release.

Walmart and Walmart Foundation announced an initial $250,000 grant to the Greater Houston Partnership to expand the workforce priorities of the Houston Economic Mobility Coalition, while United Way of Houston, Houston City College and San Jacinto College will also be partners in the effort, according to the release.

Another detail: The announcement was made at the Walmart location at 3040 College Park Drive, Conroe, which is also the location of the Walmart Academy in the area, officials said. The grant coincides with the 10th anniversary of Walmart Academy, a private training program that has seen over 4 million training completions since 2016, according to the news release.

Across Texas, public school districts have approved at least 150 campus closures in the last three years as they grapple with declining enrollment, state accountability issues and hefty budget shortfalls.

What's happening: Among the closures are 56 schools in Community Impact’s coverage areas. Some districts have said that additional closures are not off the table.

Roughly 76,000 fewer students were enrolled in Texas public schools during the 2025-26 school year than the year prior. This marks the first non-pandemic enrollment drop in recorded history, according to Texas Education Agency data collected annually since 1987.

Analysts warn that this year’s enrollment decline is not a one-off, with demographics expert Bob Templeton predicting that enrollment could “drop over 100,000 kids” next year.

What they're saying: “This was a decision that I made, even knowing some of the challenges our students are going to face, because I think the alternative is untenable,” Fort Bend ISD board President Kristin Tassin said as the district voted to close seven elementary schools ahead of the 2026-27 school year.
