Houston opens 112 cooling centers amid 100+ degree weather advisory

Houston has opened its cooling centers from July 22-23 in response to the extreme heat advisory given July 22.

What this means: During the regular city council meeting, Mayor John Whitmire said that the city’s Office of Emergency Management will open 112 sites to operate as cooling centers, including libraries, multi-service centers and community centers.

The National Weather Service issued the extreme heat warning for the hours of 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. on July 22. Officials with the NWS said temperatures were between 97 and 104 degrees, with a feels-like temperature of up to 116.

“I would urge everyone to drink lots of fluids,” Whitmire said during the meeting. “Try to stay out of the sun. We're concerned about our workers who are in those elements.”

The cooling centers are open during the daytime, with hours varying by location.

Something to note: Whitmire said one positive note is that the extreme heat is preventing Tropical Storm Bertha from intensifying further.

Blue Mambo to rebrand, relocate to Bissonnet in elevated beauty partnership with Hair Craft Collective

Reopening under the name Blue Mambo x Hair Craft, the acclaimed studio will be partnering with Hair Craft Collective—a mother-daughter-led salon specializing in modern cuts and dimensional coloring for hair textures of all types—to offer clients an enhanced line of services.

This shared workspace of more than a dozen hairstylists will also include services from Urban Muse, a wellness practice dedicated to personal transformation, energy work and intuitive readings, according to the release.

What to expect: Both Blue Mambo and Urban Muse are set to move into Hair Craft Collective’s current salon location Aug. 1, which spans approximately 2,000 square feet along 2442 Bissonnet St., Houston, officials said.

One more thing: While an official grand opening date has not been announced as of July 22, owners confirmed that Blue Mambo x Hair Craft’s soft opening will be hosted Aug. 4. The West Alabama Street location is expected to close effective immediately once relocation begins.

Tropical storm watches in effect for Texas coast as Bertha path shifts

Officials with the National Weather Service issued tropical storm watches for portions of southeast Texas as Tropical Storm Bertha is expected to make landfall by the end of the week.

What we know: Tropical Storm Bertha maintained strength overnight according to data from the NWS, but is still expected to not strengthen beyond a tropical storm before making landfall across Louisiana and Texas. However, officials said the storm itself should not cause significant impact to the region.

NWS officials urged residents along the coast in Brazoria, Chambers and Galveston counties to continue any storm preparations before Bertha makes landfall. The storm watch along the Texas coast is in effect until 6 a.m. July 24 unless it is extended.

In their words: "Bertha will bring scattered showers and thunderstorms through the day, but the threat for excessive rainfall/flash flooding is marginal," NWS officials said in a July 22 news release. "While there is not a storm surge risk, there is a threat of minor coastal flooding."
