Brazos County volunteer fire departments secure funding from Texas A&M Forest Service grants

The Texas A&M Forest Service has awarded $29.3 million to rural fire departments across the state, including nearly $300,000 going to two volunteer fire departments in Brazos County.

What you need to know: The award comes from the Rural Volunteer Fire Department Assistance Program, which designates grants to departments in the state of Texas. All departments receiving the funds are volunteer-based, with 531 total departments accepting grants.

The impact: Along with the Bryan and College Station fire departments, Brazos County has four volunteer fire departments that cover a wide area. The Brazos County Precinct 4 Volunteer Fire Department was one of the recipients of the grants, accepting $25,000 for new fire and rescue equipment. The South Brazos County Fire Department also accepted $265,000 for a new large bush truck.

Bryan’s local vinyl record store moving up the road

Curious Collections, Bryan’s only vinyl record shop, announced it is moving locations after 10 years in its current space.

What’s new: Curious Collections posted an announcement on Facebook confirming the move, expressing graditude, adding that they are grateful for a decade on Rosemary Drive.

The owners said they’re keen on staying independent, while moving just one mile up the road and transforming a vintage service station into an outdoor garage setting.

What they offer: Established in 2016, Curious Collections is Aggie owned and operated and sells vinyl records, cassette tapes, CDs and other music and entertainment related items.

The business also offers events and listening parties for new and upcoming music.

Before you go: Curious Collections is still operating at its current location on Rosemary Drive. The new location is expected to open in mid-July.

The construction of “Big 6” continues with the closure of several mainlanes and exit ramps throughout the week of June 8 in College Station.

What you need to know: 

  • June 8: Single-lane closure on Southwest Parkway and Harvey Road, 8:30 p.m.-6:30 a.m.

  • June 8-9: Full closure from Rock Prairie Road to Southwest Parkway, 8:30 p.m.-6:30 a.m.

  • June 10: Full closure from Briarcrest Drive to Martin Luther King and Old Reliance Road, 8:30 p.m.-6:30 a.m.

  • June 11: Texas Avenue exit ramp closure, 7:30 p.m.-6:30 a.m.

  • June 12: Full closure from Harvey Mitchell Parkway to Barron Road, 8:30 p.m.-6:30 a.m.

What’s next: The Texas Department of Transportation says drivers will have two lanes of access in each direction throughout the next six months of construction. Crews are focusing the work on the mainlanes, along with construction of temporary pavement and retaining walls.
