New Braunfels residents raise traffic concerns over planned 145-acre park

As New Braunfels' 145-acre Northwest Park begins to take shape, some residents worry about the traffic impact on their neighborhoods.

The latest: Throughout the development of the park’s master plan, city staff gathered public input through six focus groups and a survey.

  • 87% of respondents want the park to be based on nature and shade

  • 61% of respondents said they want trails and connectivity

  • 58% of respondents wanted a focus on family and community

  • 60% of respondents said the park should be natural and low impact

Approximately 340 survey respondents, or 83%, live in the Wasser Ranch, Northwest Crossing, Cloud Country or Arroyo Verde subdivisions, according to an Oct. 26 City Council meeting presentation.

City staff held two master plan adoption open house events at the Wasser Ranch Homeowners Association Park and City Hall in October, where residents voiced concerns regarding excessive speeding, the railroad crossing at Orion Drive and traffic congestion related to the ongoing construction of the Goodwin/Conrads Lane bond project.

Central Texas cities reevaluate Flock amid public safety debates

Cities and counties across Central Texas have recently considered new and existing contracts with the security technology company Flock Safety as debates surrounding public safety and mass surveillance heighten.

The overview: Flock Safety builds a variety of products utilized by law enforcement agencies, businesses, schools and communities, including Automated License Plate Readers, video cameras and drones.

Gov. Greg Abbott froze the use of state funding for Flock cameras on Aug. 28.

Concerns from Central Texas residents include fears surrounding mass surveillance, collecting and sharing of data with outside agencies, such as U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, or ICE, and misuse by law enforcement agencies.

In 2025, CEO and founder of Flock Safety Garrett Langley released a statement emphasizing that the company does not sell data, allows customers to decide independently what is shared with other agencies and does not have any contacts with ICE.

Cities and counties across Central Texas have responded in varying ways to the discussion surrounding the benefits and disadvantages of Flock equipment.
