Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo announces new agriculture complex along Hwy. 288

The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo is planning an expansion along Hwy. 288, with a new agricultural and livestock complex expected to add more than 1 million square feet of event and programming space.

What we know: The organization announced June 24 that the project will be the largest single facilities investment in the rodeo’s more than 90-year history. Construction is expected to take several years, with the goal of opening the complex in time for the 2029 Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.

The new facility is designed to support livestock shows, horse show competitions, junior and open breeding shows, archery competitions, agricultural mechanics, commercial auctions and educational contests, including 4-H and intercollegiate programming. Some livestock events will continue to be held at Reliant Center, according to the release.

Diving in deeper: Outside of the annual rodeo, the complex is expected to host year-round educational programming, committee meetings, fundraisers, auctions, galas and other agricultural, youth and Western heritage events.

Conroe council delays OJJERC playground replacement after concerns over $90K option

Conroe City Council held off on awarding a nearly $90,000 playground equipment contract for the Oscar Johnson Jr. Enrichment and Recreation Center on June 25 after council members said the proposed replacement may not go far enough for the new facility.

The details: The item came back to council after playground equipment from the former Oscar Johnson Jr. Community Center was damaged during an effort to move it to the new OJJERC.

According to the agenda item, Perezidente Elite Service LLC was contracted in December 2025 to relocate the equipment, but it “sustained substantial damage due to inadequate project oversight” during removal and reinstallation. City staff said replacement was ultimately determined to be the best path forward.

Purchasing staff solicited bids Feb. 5 and received nine proposals. Staff recommended Cunningham Recreation for $89,999.99, saying the proposal was within budget, scored high for play value and engagement, and closely matched the existing equipment.

Council ultimately voted to defer the item, meaning the bid award was not approved June 25.
