Get an inside look into Georgetown ISD's new elementary, middle school

Georgetown ISD is working to construct a new elementary and middle school in east Georgetown.

Although construction will be complete by this summer, the district has delayed the schools' opening until August 2027 due to slowed enrollment growth.

A closer look: GISD is constructing the following campuses off Patriot Way and SH 130 near East View High School.

Ames Elementary

  • Construction completion date: late April or early May
  • Cost: $66.57 million
  • Funding source: 2024 bond
  • Square footage: 124,744
  • Student capacity: 850 students

Middle School No. 5
  • Construction completion date: late May or early June
  • Cost: $106.05 million
  • Funding source: 2024 bond
  • Square footage: 181,574
  • Student capacity: 950 students

Latest update: Community Impact visited both campuses in March to get a closer look at the ongoing construction.

Stay tuned: GISD broke ground on its fourth high school last fall. The new campus, located on D.B. Wood Road, will open to grades 9-12 in August 2028 with a capacity for 2,200 students.

Machi Sushi opens in Georgetown

Machi Sushi, a new Japanese restaurant, is now open in Georgetown's Wolf Ranch Town Center.

Learn more: The restaurant features all-you-can-eat sushi, sashimi and hibachi, along with cocktails and boba tea. Machi Sushi held its soft opening on Feb. 20.

Check out 5 major Austin-area permits filed this week

From a retail project to a new gas station and more, here are five of the most expensive projects filed with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation in the Austin metro this week.

1. Shops at Park Place in Elgin: Hunington Properties will build two retail building shells totaling 20,059 square feet.

2. Star Mart in Leander: Austin-based Star Mart will build a 5,800-square-foot gas station in Leander.

3. Plaza at Hero Way shell building in Leander: A 10,250-square-foot retail project is planned along the ever-growing Hero Way corridor.

4. Willows at Leander Memory Care in Leander: Willows at Leander will add a 16-bed memory care building totaling approximately 10,000 square feet.

5. Silver Creek Expansion in Austin: ZMT Crystal, a limited liability company, will construct a roughly 4,556-square-foot office building.

The Austin-Bergstrom International Airport is likely to see an increase in passenger traffic through the rest of March.

What you need to know: Airport officials are anticipating the busiest travel days, with over 30,000 departing passengers, to be:

  • March 22
  • March 23
  • March 29
  • March 30
  • April 5
  • April 6

Before you go: Airport officials encourages travelers to:
  • Arrive 2.5 hours before domestic departures.
  • Arrive 3 hours before international departures.
  • Allow extra time if checking bags, returning rental cars, or traveling during peak festival days.

What else: The airport is currently undergoing a multiyear expansion program designed to upgrade facilities and increase capacity to address the record-breaking passenger traffic in recent years.
