Pink Door Designs meets clients where they are

Despite interior designers’ reputation for putting together large-scale home renovations or transforming rooms to be unrecognizable, Jamie Olivarez said her studio also offers a more affordable option.

Olivarez, an established interior designer and founder of Pink Door Designs, said she is able to offer clients consultations by the hour.

The approach: She describes her job as taking someone’s personal style and amplifying it, as she believes people’s homes should showcase who they are.

“[The house] is supposed to say ‘this is my place, this is what I’m doing and this is what I’m about,’” Olivarez said.

Read all about it: Olivarez said she is seeing trends shift with clients moving away from the modern farmhouse look that was popular a few years ago and asking for more tradition and character. Other trends include color drenching, where paint is used on walls, doors and ceilings, and the incorporation of more woodwork and trim.

Fort Bend County greenlights TxDOT primacy for Grand Parkway expansion

Grand Parkway is set to see more expansions through Fort Bend and Brazoria counties.

What happened: At a May 14 meeting, Fort Bend County commissioners voted to give the Texas Department of Transportation primacy on Segments C1 and C2, as well as the unbuilt portion of Segment D of the Grand Parkway project.

The vote allows TxDOT to be the primary contact responsible for construction and operation on the 26-mile extension from south Sugar Land to Hwy. 288 near Rosharon, Precinct 3 Commissioner Andy Meyers said in a May 19 Facebook post. The expansion, which is a part of the proposed 180-mile highway that circles the Greater Houston area, comes at no cost to the county.

In their own words: Interim County Judge Daniel Wong said the expansion is vital to the continued growth of the county, which is expected to reach over 1 million residents by 2030.

Harris County approves additional $19M for public safety facilities improvements

Harris County commissioners allocated an additional $19 million to the Harris County Sheriff's and Fire Marshal’s offices to support ongoing capital improvement projects across eight law enforcement facilities.

The overview: The May 14 vote increased funding from $100 million to $119.73 million for the projects, which aim to enhance resiliency and technology at facilities in the HCSO’s patrol districts, according to agenda documents.

Some context: Harris County voters approved a $100 million bond in 2022 to support improvements at public safety facilities, also known as Proposition A. In May 2024, Commissioners Court then allocated approximately $82.7 million in bond funds to HCSO’s proposed projects as well as $10 million for administrative costs and about $7.3 million for contingency—totaling $100 million—county documents show.

More details: The additional funding will help ensure the facilities meet updated safety codes and ensure operational resilience with enhancements such as generators, security infrastructure and structural remediation.

Looking forward: All projects are on track for construction by late 2026 and early 2027, with estimated completion slated for the second quarter of 2028.
