Pflugerville ISD to close Dessau, Parmer Lane, Pflugerville, Windermere elementaries after 2026-27 school year

The Pflugerville ISD board of trustees voted May 14 to close four elementary schools after the 2026-27 school year: Dessau, Parmer Lane, Pflugerville and Windermere. The decision comes after months of considering what optimization actions to take to address PfISD's projected multimillion dollar budget shortfalls over the next several years.

The action taken: Several alternate amendments were made against the motion to close Dessau, Parmer Lane and Pflugerville by trustee Claudia Yañez, which would have postponed making any district optimization decisions until later in the year. These amendments ultimately failed, and the board voted 7-0 to close the three campuses. Trustee Renae Mitchell also motioned to close Windermere Elementary, which passed 4-3, with Mayer, Yanez and board president Chevonne Lorigo-Johst voting against.

Some context: District officials began a district optimization process last fall, and 12 draft optimization scenarios were presented in March. Per this process, PfISD will need to make between $20 million-$26 million in cuts over the next three years to address projected budget shortfalls.

CI Texas
Early voting in Texas’ primary runoff election begins May 18. Here’s what to know.

After dozens of Texas primary races ended without a clear winner in March, candidates for those seats will face off in an overtime round, known as a runoff election, this month. Texans can vote early in the runoff election from May 18-22, with election day May 26.

How it works: State law requires that primary candidates receive more than 50% of the votes cast to advance to a general election.

In the May 26 runoff election, Republican and Democratic voters will choose who they want to represent them in statewide offices, legislative and Congressional seats, the State Board of Education and county-level positions. The winner of each runoff race will appear on the ballot in November.

On the ballot: The statewide Republican runoff races include:

  • U.S. Senate: John Cornyn and Ken Paxton
  • Texas attorney general: Mayes Middleton and Chip Roy
  • Texas railroad commissioner: Jim Wright and Bo French

The statewide Democratic runoffs are:
  • Texas attorney general: Nathan Johnson and Joe Jaworski
  • Texas lieutenant governor: Vikki Goodwin and Marcos Vélez
